Any comments on this as a daily driver: 2001 audi A6 2.7T Quattro (twin turbo) 52,000 miles, sliver/black. No dings, virtually no wear on inside, no accidents, drives fine, all books, keys etc, clear title at the dealer. At my local small town Chyrsler dealer for $20k asking. Best part: it's a 6 speed.
2nd... not a car I'd want to buy unless it has a certified pre-owned warranty 6 yr/100k miles on it, or already have set aside money for the worst case scenario, like blown turbos..
Audis are awesome! 2001 should still be under warranty, and definitely should qualify for an extended one.
yeah like others suggested they are expensive to maintain. Like others said the turbos go but don't forget about things like seat heaters, xenon headlights. They will have to be replaced at some time. A certified pre-owned warranty is definitely the way to go with this or any other Audi for that matter. You may be able to purchase the warranty after you buy the car from Audi but I am not sure. $20K sounds like a low price though. Check the front and rear brakes as well. The Clutch and brakes will have to be replaced soon if they haven't been already but that is just wear and tear items. I bought a certified preowned Audi in the past and that warranty saved me many times.
the boss at chez doody drives a six-speed 2.8 quattro 1998 A4. no matter what i try, i can't get her to let me replace it. it's been out of warranty for some time now and hasn't caused any grief worth mentioning - though the mileage is only 45K or so. no turbos on the 2.8 of course. doody.
Turbo's do go, but there are things that you can do to increase the life of them, like a turbo timer. In addition, they will usually need replacing in the 100K mile or more range. But some Audi owners have had to replace them alot earlier.
I have one of these-- mine is a 2000, I bought it in 2002 with 9k miles. I am very, very, happy with it. The car been trouble-free so far. The only problem I can think of is that the nav system occasionally wouldn't start, and since the dealer replaced it under warranty it's been fine. Well, as good as it can be-- it's a pretty lame nav system. I think these cars are quite reliable, as long as you don't chip them or do stuff like that. If you start chipping them and increasing the boost, you'll get more power but you'll also directly reduce the turbo life. I don't know about the price-- sounds a bit high to me. Probably some negotiating room there. I'd make an offer-- if it's at all reasonable, they should take it. 6-speed buyers don't come along every day. Then, I'd get a PPI and go for it!
It appears there are plenty on eBay for $17.5K-$18.9K. Of course most are autos which I don't want. But, the price prob cam be worked on. I think I read these are low pressure turbos, like maybe 6PSI? Anybody know if low pressure turbos last longer. Also, the turbo timer idea: Do people really do that to regular sedans like this or just to things like RX7 turbos??
I'd recommend a turbo timer for any turbo car that has oil cooled turbo's. With the Audi's water cooled turbo's, turbo timers really are not a benefit to reduce or eliminate coking. My fault for jumping the gun, I thought they were oil cooled. I will say that the turbo timer will keep your car running to reduce heat left in the engine after shutting it off. The turbo's are smaller, but still generate massive amounts of heat after spirited driving. But people do use them in just about every performance oriented car with turbocharging, from the G35 TT to the Eclipse, and I even recommend them with the F355TT kit. The highest price one costs $150, but most are about $90-$100. A little amount of money to save thousands.
FYI, my bro had an 01 2.7 t tip (auto) until recently (put on about 55K). Except for a tranny that had to be replaced at around 9K, it was pretty reliable. Still, there are lots of little issues that are known to come up with some miles, so you might want to cruise some audi forums to see if you want to mess with it. Not all are fatal, but can be pretty annoying, I suppose. (ie, the little digital display between the gauges*will* get wonky on you, just a matter of time.) Wonderful motor, with lots of usable torque. Still, I never liked the way the car handled. Not plush, yet not stiff. I think the later models had a revised (better?) suspension. Really great looking interior, no?
