My summer has hit a boring stretch, and asides from work and the bar I find myself just sitting around. SO, last night my friend and I were talking about a "challenge" to add some excitement into our days. Basically we each have $2000 to spend on a used car and another $1000 to spend on upgrading it, performance and looks. We are not allowed to tell/show eachother what we purchase and are working on until 2 weeks from now.

I have spent my day looking around and have come to the conclusion that my choices are

    -Audi A4 1.8T (B5)
-BMW E30, cant get too picky between the l4 and l6
    -BMW E39
-Porsche 944, prefer the turbo but S would be fine

Keep in mind performace isn't everything, looks and style will also play a good portion.

    Feel free to suggest someothers.

A-ha! I'd always wondered if any of the TopGear gents checked out this site and now you need a sporting edge on your "challenge"? :D

E39 weighs too much, in terms of performance (unless E39 M5 cost 1000 $ in the US).

E30 is quite nimble and underrated. Very lightweight as well. Some suspension mods and ripping out the interior is a great start.

1.8T Audi is a pig but can get up to 220-240 hp "easy". How much do you have to spend to get a family saloon sporty, though? Hmm.

944 I have no idea what it's capable of, but Jeremy C. liked it. Probably the most driver focused and probably the most beaten down of this bunch on the second hand market.

    Miata?

Go for the E30 (325i or is for the 168hp version), put it on a diet and upgrade the suspension.

$2000 for a car and $1000 in upgrades...BMW, Porsche, and Audi are not the best brands. Expensive parts where $1000 doesn't get you very far. Miata is a good car to start with, great fun, handling and needs a bit of power to make it a hoot. I had a NA Miata with a Jackson Racing supercharger, KYB suspension, rims, tires, roll hoops etc...and it was one of the best handling cars that put a smile on my face every single day I drove it.

What are the criteria for performance? Acceleration? Lap time around a track? Braking?

Of your list, I think the E30 makes the most sense. Any 944 in your price range is likely beat, same for an A4.
I just picked up a '92 Dodge Spirit R/T for a good price. Probably won't win any looks competitions, but it's stock 224hp is a good start.

I want to try and stay away from the american and asian cars. Sure I could buy a CRX and toss a turbo kit in......but come on, thats not even fun.
