I was wondering what the experience of those of you that own Audi has been? Have the cars been trouble free? Are they well made? How do they hold there value? What model & years are the best? Etcetera.

I haven't ever owned an Audi, but I'm thinking about getting one. So before I decide, I thought I would ask those of you that have owned them.

    I have an '04 Audi A6 2.7T S-Line. I love it. I hate it. Does that help?

    Love:
    1. Much faster than you would expect.
    2. Absolutely beautiful car (last of old body style A6).
    3. Interior is finished very well, stereo is very good.
    4. Handling is very good.
    5. Rain no longer matters. At all. I love the rain. (Quattro rocks!)
    6. Big trunk, folding rear seat, lots and lots and lots of space.

    Hate:
    1. Much faster than you would expect.
    2. Eats tires, but I have soft, high-perf., 18" tires, and I drive like a hooligan.
    3. Ate a transmission in 7k miles, maybe a fluke, but still sucked not having my car for three weeks. (Might have been fixed faster, lousy dealer.)
    4. Overwhelming urge to 'mod' my car and invalidate my warranty and empty my bank account.
    5. Resale just as bad as any car on the market.
    6. Fuel economy worse than I expected. (See Hate: items 1&2)

Hope this helps. Which model are you considering?

I own a 2002 Audi A6 (my wifes car) we love it! Moved up from a VW Jetta.
The car has plenty of power, great handling, and seems to be very reliable,

    Go for it!

I own a 2000 A6 6-speed. I love it-- fast, quiet, reliable, everything you could ask for in a daily driver. Previously, I had a 100S and before that a Coupe Quattro. So, I've owned Audis for a long time!

One thing about Audis-- generally, the cars are great but the dealers are lousy. My local dealer seems to be trying to improve, but they have a way to go before they get close to Lexus, at least from a service point of view.

I owned a 2000 Audi TT for nearly four years. If you are looking to buy used definitely get a certified preowned warranty. That will save you a ton of money if you plan to keep the car beyond the standard warranty. I had some electrical problems and mechanical problems but it could have been due to the fact that I had a first year model. My dealer was good to deal with for the most part. I always got a loaner car whenever I brought my car in for service.

How about the S8 series? I have a soft spot for that model for some reason. The big Mercs and Bimmers are nice, but way too many of them. The S8 is big but not common, I guess that's why I like them. That and there is something stealthy about the way they look. Very James Bond-ish.

How about gas milage for the various models? I travel 110 miles round trip for work. I'm getting about 31/mpg with my current work car. Are the A4's any good on gas?

Best friend has a 2001 A4 Turbo. 66k miles, zero issues.

He also has a APR chip that boosts HP to 250 and runs
with it turned on 24/7, and still no issues.

Ive got a 98.5 A4 1.8T Quattro 5 speed with the sport package and 81,000 miles on it. Every problem ive had has been because of driver error(hit a curb, yadda, yadda, yadda). Gets darn good gas milage. My car is a little slow since it isnt tuned, but like the other poster said a chip will get you 250ftlb for only 400 bucks, darn good deal imo.

The S8 is nice, but theyre really showing their age now imo. If you can swing it, id wait for the new S8 instead.

The most coveted used Audi would most definitely be the B5 S4. Very good looking car, can be made fast, and its rather rare. 2002 was the last year for the B5 and if i remember right they only made about 1400ish S4s that year.

TT are fun little cars too. I had a white 225(the fastets Turbo TT) tt for a whole day, its a really fun and solid car. The 3.2 just came out so thatd be worth taking a look at.

Are you going for new or Used?
I think my next Audi will be a B5 S4, thats still my favorite body style.

And as far as dealer service goes, Momentum Audi of Houston has been great with me.

This is rare, very rare at least from what I've seen. Three friends who've had them have had nothing but issues. One was so bad that Audi had to buy it back once evidence was shown that the car spent more time in shop in the first six months than it did in the owner's hands.

Just get the warranty and should be fine.

I still have a 2001 S8 that I bought new, was planning on selling it but it is such a great driver that I decided to buy an Audi extended warranty - even though and it has been pretty trouble free - and keep driving it. An out of warranty Audi is generally not a good thing. In my opinion it is an extremely handsome car and it is very rare sight to see one on the road, probably 100 S55s to 1 S8 around here.

That being said, dealer service is utter rubbish, I got much better service at the Jeep dealer for my Wrangler. To be fair my friends with Mercs and BMWs say the same thing about their experiences. If you want good service buy a Lexus or a Ferrari.

I have a A4 2.8L Quattro, and it is a fine little car.

    Pros:
Superb handling in the rain & snow w/ the Quattro.
Great interior, probably best interior in its class.
Also great exterior styling, again IMHO best in class.
    Excellent highway manners.
Has been perfectly reliable so far.
Lots and lots of thoughtful touches.

    Cons:
AT does funny things, often leaves me in a higher gear than I want.
Feels a little tippy in the tight corners.

That's about it. I like it better than a friend's 328i I have driven, and I think I will be an Audi guy from now on for my winter cars.

    Thanks for the responces guys.

I will be buying used. I don't like taking the hit on a new car just to be the first.

As for what model, it really is between an A4 or the S8. I REALLY like the S8's, but with the way gas prices are right now I don't think it would be wise to get another vehical that loves to drink gas. So that's why I'm considering the A4.

How about the cost of up keep? Parts prices and so forth.

Before I bought my A6, I had picked out an A4 with the 1.8T motor and a six-speed with the Ultrasport Package. I ended up getting the A6 mostly because of space, and my wife wouldn't let me get the A4 in the Avant body style. The 1.8T isn't the fastest thing in the world, but it's pretty peppy, and with a $500 chip, it's no slouch. I think they started that package in '04, but there are bound to be a couple on the market by now. It looks better than the S4 (to me), and is a lot cheaper to run.

We've had a Coupe quattro since 1990; it's still a fantastic car! quite underpowered tho....
Selling it now only to replace with an 06 S4Avant 6speed. That's going to be terrific too. True 'stealth' car.
