Have a look at these pics.. I can't figure out what it is. I do not think it is a camera by the look of the tubes and enclosure it generates a lot of heat. Well I just "assumed" it was night vision because the yellow thing looks like a camera. The 2 green tubes are BNC connections which are used for video, and the black connector above that seems to have a fiber optic cable coming out of it. Also someone said the car had night vision, so I "assumed" this was the box for it.
Yep, it's a FLIR system (Forward Looking InfraRed), aka nightvision. Although, too bad he couldn't hide it a little better. That thing would cost $$$ to fix if you whacked anything with it.

That car is F***ing rigged! Im impressed. I think this one words a little further out. Not just for deer on a country road. Referring to my comment above, I do suppose it works leagues beyond the Merc, but, how well CAN you see? How far out? Where's the display? Speaking of which: http://www.cvs.flir.com/dve/ It says the thing only weighs .08 lb. I have to believe the one installed on this R8 is not for civilian use. Those coils around the box are for cooling so this thing has to generate some serious heat...
