I am installing an upgrade stereo in my 348 and am planning on locating the amplifier on the forward wall of the trunk (pretty well in the center of the forward wall. I have pulled the carpet/fabric interior of the trunk and find that it is functionally impossible to see what if anything lies between the trunk forward wall and the front bumber assembly. Clearly there are a few inches of space but prior to drilling holes to mount the amp, I want to make sure I don't drill into something unexpected.

I have searched the archives and looked at the manual and can't find anything to worry about but thought it would be wise to consult with those with "the knowledge".

Is there anything to worry about?

Thanks for your help and Happy Easter.

I installed my amplifier in the floor of the trunk and then created a new custom "floor" on top of it so the trunk is still empty and usable with just a little less depth.

Thought about a floor mount but felt preserving height is more valuable trunk space rather than the fore/aft dimension as the hood hangs over the forward part of the trunk when open.

I realize that this does not answer your question and probably does you absolutely no good if you already have the amp, but there are a few decent amps that are small enough to mount inside the center console in place of the seat belt modules. Just now in the process of reclaiming my front trunk floor by replacing two amps and a crossover with a single four channel amp in the center console, but no pics yet. Sorry I can't help with your original question...

That's a beautiful installation. I love the etched shield on the window.

I'm getting ready to do the same. One of my POs had a stereo system installed and I'm not a big fan of it. What amp are you looking at using?

My amps are fixed to a 1/2in board which is covered with the same black material as the trunk carpet. That board is then screwed into the front wall of the front compartment. You shouldn't have any problem.

On the advice of a friend who stays current on car audio, I chose the Massive Audio BX4 but there are others that might be suitable as well, such as the Soundstream Picasso Nano. A home audiophile buddy who also appreciates decent mobile sound used a BX4 in another tight application and seconded that recommendation, so I'm pretty confident that it will meet my expectations.

In addition to a small footprint, overall height matters as well since the amp must be mounted vertically so a shorter amp means more airflow across its top. My mount design has the mounting plate against the right side of the of the steel tunnel inside the center console and L brackets securing it to the top of the tunnel, using the screw holes for the seat belt modules. From what I can tell so far the BX4 will be able to be spaced just a bit off the mounting plate to allow airflow under it and will still have an air gap between the top of the amp and the center console side cover..

It's all pretty tight, which is why I haven't got it mounted yet (measure a dozen times, cut once) but it sure looks like it'll all fit. I hope to mount the crossovers on the horizontal area of the chassis in front of and above the amp, using industrial grade adhesive Velcro, so hopefully all of the electronic components can be housed inside the center console, meaning short wiring runs and no lost trunk space.

That's not that bad for size. I was looking at the RetroSound Quad4 to install in that same location. The entire front wall of my trunk has an amplifier and 2 large crossovers from the 1990s. I need to get it all out of there and into the console.

Save yourself the 50 plus pounds and do away with a sound system altogether.
