Porsche, as one would expect from a well run German company, assigns a sequentional number for its projects. 906 has nothing to do with it having a 6 cylinder engine, its a coincidence. They also built a 907 , 908 and a 910. Project 914 was a car, project 916 was a six cylinder engine with twin cams. 917 was simply the next project number
