8 years is great going, 5 years is normal these days, I suspect because of the drain from the various always-on ECU's.

I replaced a battery last year which was 11 years old. Car was always on a CTek trickle charger. I only replaced it because Gezim told me “you need to replace that otherwise it will fail at the worst possible moment. You cheap bastard.” I told him I’d park it on a hill if that were to happen.

Conversely had to replace a 3 year old very expensive Varta battery on another car that also lived on a CTek. Was only 3 years old. Car rarely driven however. I think that is the key. Strangely, you do have to drive them.

Funny he calls me that too. The Aston had a Varta - a bloody truck battery. I was a bit pissed off it failed, it was only 13 years old.

I replace the battery in my cars every 3 years usually, but I don't think I'll do that with the big one in the i3

I thought about your original question and I think your "under 60 hours" statement is about right.

    My estimate:
Remove engine from car: 1 day
Dismantle, clean, bag & tag parts: 1 day (allowing double time for seized/stripped studs)
Measuring, then packing and despatching major components for machining: 1 day
Reassemble engine: 4 days (allowing 1/2 day to do cam timing)
    Reinstall engine 1 day
Total 8 days = 64 hours = 60 hours if you just use the factory cam timing marks.

All of the above assumes a block in reasonable shape that doesn't need decking and that you've sent the heads away to be rebuilt.

Thanks Ian. I agree with you for once. They're quite a simple engine, but the terrorist mechanics on here clearly don't want to give that impression. I must admit I was surprised about some of the reactions, but as if I care lol
