Mateschitz and Bernie agreed to bring back the Austrian GP in Zeltweg for next year: SPEEDWEEK Formel 1 - Österreich im F1-Fieber: Red Bull Ring-GP bis 2020! Scheduled for July 6th *IF* they get all the necessary approvals from the Austrian government. This is fantastic news and if they succeed I will have to tone down the rhetoric agains the cans. I love the Zeltweg/A1 track and was sad to see it leave after 2003. OTOH: One can also argue that this is bad news for the NY GP. How many GPs can you cram into one season? Bernie already hedging his bets (well of course)?
NY ain't happening; red bull has the money, and clout, to get things done. Very good news seeing another race in Europe.... Kevin

Confirmed (in English ) at Pitpass; pitpass - Austrian GP return to mark end for New Jersey? Good news indeed - Been to what was then the Ostereichring many times "back in day" - Really nice track in a fabulous setting. [Zeltweg, not so much BTW. ] Not so good for NJ of course. Pitpass seems to think there's no way it can be done unless they ****can the summer break and accept 21 races - I don't think they want either. Good for Dieter and his boys. Definitely great to see another Euro race. I'd love to know how much the Cans are paying Bernie too - Has he cut his buddy a sweetheart deal I wonder? Cheers, Ian
You do realize that Red Bull bought the A-1 Ring, destroyed it and rebuilt it? I'm not sure if the layout is even similar to how it was. It's now dubbed the "Red Bull Ring," so you may want to reconsider toning down that rhetoric I would love to see them race there again though. Easily the most beautiful setting for a track on the GP calendar other than Monaco. I've missed that race. Edit: Nevermind, I guess they just tore down and rebuilt the grandstands/pit buildings. I was thinking it was the whole track. The layout appears to be the same as the A1 Ring. I wonder if this track would be Red Bull's Fiorano if testing wasn't banned.
Definitely cool news as I'm always in for more dates on the season. Bummed that NJ doesn't seem to be happening as that's in my backyard and would have been awesome.
great setting for a race... but who's loosing a race next season? I think there is room for another race, certainly between the german and hungary race, or cut short the summer holiday.
From what i heard, it's a go. They should just leave the A1 ring as it is. Superb track with flowing corners.
My concern remains with the govt approving this: Austria has lots of greenies who see racing/F1 as enemy #1
Don't we all! :-( Pardon my ignorance, but what needs to be "govt approved"? Seems Dieter owns the place & is putting up the $. WTF has the gubmint got to with them hosting a GP? Cheers, Ian
Dunno the details but if Austia is like Switzerland (and in many ways it is) then nothing happens unless the govt sanctions it. The article I referenced also mentions the permits they need to get. The German speaking nations aren't really ruled by capitalism As for the greenies: you haven't seen anything until you met one from those nations, they're like a different species
If the German authorities keep coming after Bernie - Then an Austrian GP should be a nice straight forward swap for the German GP!
There was a time when GP venues were determined by a track's ability to sell seats. Believe it or not.
Every time I think I have them figured out I read another article in a German magazine and realize that I have not a clue of how they're thinking. It is totally bizarre. Only once did I come across a similar "thought process" here in the States where some teenage kids protested against bottled water because it is "a sellout of the natural resources". I left shaking my head realizing that some people I'll never get.
Btw - time to remove the question mark from the title...this event will happen...our of all the other proposals, this - to me - is the only one with legs.... Kevin
