I'm looking to buy an 05 F430 and it's harder to spend a couple of hundred than I anticipated. :)

On an essentially identical car, what should the delta be in price between an authorized dealer, an independent dealer, and a private party?

I realize that every car is different, but I can account for one having an additional 1k miles, or not having shields, etc.

Is it worth an extra $7500 to get from an auth dealer? Is it worth saving $10k buying privately?

The dealers work together to keep the prices high, many of their used cars are on consignment so the dealers are not as motivated to sell them, and nice used cars look good on the salesfloor which otherwise would be empty. Depending on the year of the car, you can save a lot more than $10,000 by buying from a private party.

Dont think it is worth 10K but buying from a dealer presumably you would have a recourse if the car turned out to have problems. Of the Ferraris that I have (or had) I bought 10 from Dealers (or direct from Ferrari- which could be done and was pretty common prior to FNA; look at Raabs SN book and see the number of sales to individuals). The other 3 I bought from individuals that I knew.

If it's a certified pre-owned (Power) program car, and you plan to drive it, you might want the extra warranty coverage. My experience is mostly with the older cars, but I believe you can burn through $7500 pretty fast on repairs, and with all the electronics on the newer ones I think there's some value to a Ferrari warranty.

For $200K or thereabouts, I'd want absolute trust in the seller, whoever it is.

Depends on with who you want and what kind of relationship you want to build...

To get in the pipeline to buy new cars around here, you need to go through the dealer.

From a former mechanics view (sort of like Helms saying "there's a mess to clean up around here..." :)), independents appear much more sketchy and all over the map except a few well-known and very long-standing folks.

    It's a crap shoot...

There are a couple of great points that have been made and I would like to add something...

I'm in sales at a Ferrari Dealer and building a relationship with a dealer can go a long way! The one thing I hear the most is guys that can't understand why they can't buy something new when it first comes out...??? We'll, when we only get 6-15 of something, it's going to be offered to the guys that have been supporting the Dealership for the past few years. Yes, you might be able to save a little money buying from an individual, but I hope you know the person or at least know the car! You can get BURNED pretty quick otherwise... I take a lot of time and spend many hours to earn the trust and respect of my clients so the last thing I want to do is "sell" you something that's not 100% or that you might have problems with! A dealer is going to stand behind the car and take care of the client. We won't sell a consignment car that needs a major service or is due for a yearly. The services must be up to date before we deliver that car. Buying from an individual, you may spend another 5 - 10k to get the car up to date on it's services and then you're back to where you would have been with the dealer, and no closer to getting a "New" car...

Mojosan, I hope this helps and please feel free to call me if I can help! I own a Ferrari myself and I'm very active in the Ferrari Club and would love the opportunity to earn your business!
