Good morning. I am new to the forum. Can anyone point me in the right direction to begin authenticating my Dino? The car has been owned by my family for approximately 40 years. I believe everything is original but would like to go through the process of learning more about the vehicle. Thank you. Pete
Welcome! There are a lot of friendly knowledgable people here. We'll be happy to help. Providing some more information would be a good place to start. What country are you in? What's the serial number of your car? A few pictures would be great too - everyone likes to see them!
Can you post some photos of your Dino please, chassis number, etc... Interesting thread here : https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/dino-serial-numbers.598074/page-20
Pete Welcome - there are many deeply knowledgeable Dino people here I, unfortunately, am not really one of them - but let me be the first to ask for to post pictures and share any stories you have about where your family first acquired the car All Dinos have a 5 digit VIN that will start the process of discovery - my car is a 74 GTS with the VIN 07798 There is a book called the Dino Compendium authored by a gentlemen who is a member of this forum - he is a Titan of knowledge and I would think will reach out to you through private message to ask about the cars history But my guess is that your car is in the compendium and I have both editions - if you share the 5 digit code I may be able to share what is in the Bible of Dinos Welcome - Cheers - pics please - John
I would recommend starting by obtaining any/all books on Dinos, but perhaps specifically a copy of the “Dino Compendium” by M. Bartz. It may seem pricey, but I believe it is universally(?) accepted as The Gold Standard of Dino authenticity information (I haven’t read it nor do own a copy). As for the request by others to reveal the cars Chassis/Serial/Vehicle Identification Number, License Number, etc or even sharing pictures (from which the car can be identified) in public (including forums like this), I would highly recommend thinking twice before doing anything like that at this early stage of your research. While this may seem excessive or unnecessary suggestion, but once you share any such personal/private information, there’s always a possibility you may find yourself regretting it later, as in “Unintended consequences of your good intentions”, for which I could recite countless examples in similar cases.
Thank you for all the nice replies. My Dino is #04782. I'm in Florida. I will take a few pictures and post them in the coming days. My father bought the car at auction locally when I was in elementary school. (I'm 51 now). We have had it garage kept under cover ever since. Any information is greatly appreciated.
I took these identification photos on May 17. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
From the Compendium: #4780 /E 246GTS Jan 73 USA Looks like the Compendium has the wrong build date. The car before yours (#4780) is listed as Sep '72. Your plate says Oct 72 which would be consistent with that.
Thank you for the reply and the information. Interesting that the build date would be that much later, although I am clueless to whether the factory was pushing units out daily, weekly, monthly. I appreciate it.
. This ^^ type of inconsistencies and several potential reasons for them have been discussed before. Nothing odd or unusual with old (production) Ferraris.
Thank you for the feedback. Do you think the inconsistencies were from manual recordkeeping at the time?
Hi and Welcome Would be interesting to see pics of the interior and engine etc without revealing to much detail if you feel uncomfortable with this. If the car is un-restored (rare nowadays) then its a useful reference point for others on the forum. So many are over restored and we lose precious details. Tony
Thank you for sharing these photos of your car. Does the car run and drive? What are you plans for the car?
What part of Florida? There are many Ferrari Chat members in Florida, myself included, and several Dino owners and former owners who I’m sure would be glad to help you. The shop where the car has been serviced should be able to assist as well.
After several decades of involvement, i.e. nearly full-time preoccupation as an enthusiast/hobbyist, owner, researcher & (hands on) restorer of numerous vintage cars, for both clients and my own, I’ve come to understand the reasons for their manufacturing and/or record keeping inconsistencies can be just about as many one can imagine. It is also why I rarely take anything printed, let alone shared on interweb forums (like this one) as a gospel, regardless of the author/poster. For example, I’m currently working on a quite rare, highly collectible nearly 100 year old, 3 owner car with relatively well recorded ownership/service/restoration history since new, yet just few days ago, inadvertently discovered (& photo documented) a strange discrepancy/inconsistency in one of its “numbers matching” component stampings that doesn’t seem to make sense and since I’ve never worked on a car like it before, I (privately) sought consultation from 3 individuals with decades of (professional) experience with them and we all concluded the reason for this “discrepancy/inconsistency” may never become clear.
04798 (8 cars after the OP’s car) has a door plate that says October 1972 but was completed January 25, 1973 per Mr. Massini. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Keep in mind for US spec vehicles, chassis numbers had to be identified to meet importation/DOT requirements. A lot of the US cars are not in sequence from their euro counterparts.
Go to the source, Matthas Bartz, https://www.dino-book.com/ buy his report from Ferrari factory records on your exact Dino and confirm all correct before showing numbers here. TTR is correct, these numbers are important and need to be correct or you suffer. Everyone future buyer will want to see this bartz report so is best to buy now
on these pictures all looks untouched..... production date 22nd of January 1973... plates often pre-stamped by Ferrari, nothing unusual, nothing to worry about.... do still have the original warrenty card? if, please post the first page with first owner....
Yes, Tim is VERY experienced and knowledgeable about Dinos, not to mention a great guy. Tim Stanford Foreign Cars, 287 SW 33rd Street, Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33315- (954) 764-7824.
Thank you guys. I'll reach out to him. I have used Mike Gokey with German Performance off Powerline and Commercial for over 30 years. He's been so busy for months, it's hard to get the car on a lift over there. Great guy, just busy. Again, thank you.
