First post for me. With Joe Sackey's help, I just bought a US F40, and I'm in the market for the best enclosed auto hauler for that car. I like the idea of towing my own car to events, and had done so for years with my Miura. I would appreciate any tips on models, lengths, accessories and features most needed and desired for towing the F40. I'm limited to 8,500 lbs gross towing weight, car and hauler. One concern I have with the haulers I have inspected is the 81-inch width between inner wheel well covers. That is a narrow fit for a car that is 78 inches wide. Also, what about winching the car in, versus driving it in?

OK, experts, what are your thoughts?

Congrats Ron, enjoy your wonderful car in the best of health ! I remember the day I took delivery like yesterday, so I can well imagine how you feel. All the best with it.

As far as haulers, I have a couple of suggestions you may find helpful, and I'm sure others with even more experience hauling can chime in. I bought a 2 car enclosed gooseneck 48' Optima, and I had a winch installed. A winch with a remote gives you inch by inch control over the loading process, and spaces tend to get tight. Also, a winch eliminates wear and tear on the clutch as you inch forward up an incline. It really is the most precise way of loading IMHO.

As far as a securing system, mine has "D" rings, but I would recommend an "E" track system since you can put straps directly around the tires and tie down each wheel...very secure. Big time carriers like Horseless Carriage use this system in their trucks. Once loaded, and secured, leave the car in neutral.

Here are a couple of pics of my setup. Optima trailers are all aluminum, and built to a very decent standard.

Again, congratulations on your wonderful purchase, and all the best.

    Ron,

    I have a solution:

    Just drive it there :)

OR, if you are unavailable to do so, just call me and I will drop everything and I will drive it there for you at no cost at all!! Now that is what I call service, dont you think?

Tell me that after all our not inconsiderable effort (remember what we went through?) to secure this car from whence it was hidden, far far away from public knowlege, you will not now proceed to turn it into a trailer queen??

Seriously, after you asked me I did some checking and I came up with the answer. Try www.candcmfgco.com
For almost 40 years they have custom-built lightweight enclosed trailers and in the last few decades they have 288 GTO, F40, F50 and Enzo clients amongst their satisfied customers, not to mention innumerable vintage racers who have them routinely build trailers for their Ferrari racecars. They are far and away the BEST for what I know youll need.

Here is an F40 owner who uses their services.

BTW, Im thrilled you ended up with this special car...
