I'm going to the Detroit show in a couple of weeks. I plan on bringing my Canon 20D and I purchased this lens for it.

Anyone have suggestions or exif info on what they've used?

I am taking a Sony Cyber-shot 7.2 mega pixel camera and a Motorola Razr phone to the Autosport International show in Birmingham, UK the 14 & 15 of January. Can send photos to email addresses via the phone from there.

    Enjoy the show in Detroit.

I've used the stock 18-55mm lens at all the shows I've been too on my Canon.

I've always wanted to try a wider angle lens, maybe 7mm fisheye, just haven't gotten around to it.

I find in the tight quarters of a car show, that anything beyond 55mm doesn't give you any room to manuever, and is too tight a shot to get much of the car.

Sounds like you bought the right lens for tight shots w/ latitude for some nice long shots. Inside with f-4 you won’t have much dof so go w/ med wide angle & crop later for close ups. I've used Canon as well as Nikon 35mms for 25 years. You can't go wrong w/ a Canon lens for quality -worth the extra cost when you examine results closely. You will share won’t you?

The lens arrived today and it's great. I think it will work well at the show.

I'll be sure to post shots if I have any good ones.

If you have a Nikon look into a VR lens. Vibration Reduction is sweet!

Canon calls there "VR" len's IS, For Image Stabilizing. Great len's, but the price's are quite high.

Correct "IS" is image stabilizing and it works to keep hand shake from softening a shot at a slow shutter speed. It gives you an extra stop or two.

"L" is also important as it is the pro canon lens and it is much more solid and better optics. Also, I'm sure I could knock someone out with it if they get in my shot ;)

Just saw that my link was bad.....

    This is the lens

Ok, you have the best lens money can buy. Now get yourself a filter for protection. But choose wisely. All UV, ND, Skylight filters are not equal.

I'm sure the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens that you just bought will be an excellent all-purpose lens on your excellent camera. Wide-angle, though, it is not, as you may have found if you've used it yet.

    From http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/canon/eos_20d-review/index.shtml:
One thing to remember about digital SLRs: due to their smaller sensor size (versus 35mm film) and therefore narrower angle-of-view, the effective focal range of the lens is 1.6 times what it says on the lens. That means that the 18-55 included in the 20D lens kit is equivalent to a 28.8 - 88 mm if used on a 35mm camera. This is great if you like telephoto shots, but for wide-angle you may have to invest some money into some wide-angle lenses. Thankfully there's the new 10-22 mm EF-S lens, which is a relative bargain at $800.

Although your new lens will go as wide as 24mm if mounted on a 35mm film camera body, it will actually go from 38.4-168mm on the 20D. What other lenses do you own? If you have the 18-55 kit lens, you should take that also in case you find yourself in need of a slightly wider angle, or consider a true wide angle (zoom) to supplement your new lens, such as the EF-S 10-22mm:
    http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=148&modelid=10510
That one will get you down nice and wide.

    Good Luck and have fun.

I do and I shouldn't have bought it. That lens is crap compared to the L IS. I took some shots of my car from about 6' out and got it in so I should be wide enough.

I understand about the 1.6x issue and you're right but I've tested the lens for distance and it should be fine. I might miss a shot but I'll take that chance.

My advice: You want to take good shots? Get a L lens w/IS.........

Best Digital cams have interchangable lenses
Always buy a lens with an f value of 2.8
Always use a bounce flash with a diffuser and deflecter
You will not need image stabilization with this combo.
Digital gets fun above 6 Mega pix but can still be phenominal at 4 and 5.
