    I suppose if we were all 18-35 year old, no kids, located in major urban centers and lived in a studio apartment 2 blocks from our job at a coffee shop/"boutique" used clothing store/used record store, not owning a car could be a possibility.

    A load of crap.

    I'm reading a good book right now, called Zoom: The Global Race to Fuel the Car of the Future, co-authored by a correspondent for The Economist. It's a Financial Times book of the year finalist, or something similar.

    What's refreshing is that you think it's going to be some liberal academic rant against cars, but the authors start out by saying that the car is an important and cherish social fixture, and isn't going away. Then they rightly dig into politicians, big oil, etc.
