I just read an article in the March R&T mag about a possible move in Germany to put a speed limit of 130KPH (81MPH) on the autobann. Also pointed out that they had increased the number of speed limits through congested areas which had reduced the number of highway deaths. It also spoke of the increase of speed radar on most of the roads. It said that traffic deaths dropped in 2006 by 42% which was 5000 people. This is 62 deaths per million vs. Sweden who has the safest roads at 50 DPM. I know that a lot of the small towns I had traveled through were pretty tough on speeders with photo radr all over the place. So I guess it will be interesting over the next 5-10 years to see if they shut down the overall speed. So you better go there soon if you still want to get the thrill of the autobann.

If they put a speed limit on the entire Autobahn, they could be compromising tourism greatly...I wouldn't do it.

Maybe when she's finished being prime minister she can come here and run for president. She's got my vote.

I hope everyone here knows that there is no "autobahn."

An "autobahn" is a highway. Every major highway in Germany -- and there are many -- is an autobahn.

I have driven many, many times in Germany on the autobahns at speeds as high as 180 miles/hour. Only in certain areas is there no speed limit. Much of the time, the speed limit is indeed 130 km/hour; and when you see a sign that shows 130 with a double line striking through the number 130, then you know there's no speed limit -- time to drive like a maniac.

The no speed limit zone does not last forever. The speed limit returns when there are tunnels, sharp curves, or other possible hazards.

I'm not even kidding you when I say that a "slow" speed on the autobahns, especially in areas with no speed limit, is 115 miles/hour. It's great. A comfortable, nonchalant cruising speed is at 135 miles/hour. Above 140 and you're starting to go pretty fast.

Timid drivers don't drive on the road; and you can really get to where you need to go in a hurry and with great pleasure. I have driven many thousands and thousands of miles on those roads and have never once seen an accident or a cop. I've seen traffic and construction (lots of it), but never an incident.

    It won't happen.... but...

Keep in mind, most of the highways in Germany are already restricted. Only certain sections remain unlimited, and even then, it's conditions permitting.

ohh and Emil.. you beat me.

I only got 190kmph in a diesel Ford Focus Estate in 2002.
