It says in the letter that they are trying to get refunds/reimbursements out so why the extreme panic?

Me too, Uro. I've recommended AutoLifters too many times to count, including a strong recommendation to you. Never suspected they were having troubles.

In retrospect, I should have wondered aloud how they were managing to charge 30% less than I paid in 1999 for the same lift despite tripling steel costs. Apparently they weren't managing too well. Makes you wonder about the other manufacturers who are still down at the $2,000 point..

I sincerely hope you get all of your money back!

I don't believe this is true. The FCBA (Fair Credit Billing Act) allows the merchant up to 30 days from the date of order receipt to ship the product. I know that our CC payment processor allows 15 days from the charge date to the date the product ships. That may be a VISA/Mastercard regulation but it can't be from the individual issuing bank, because as a merchant I'd have no way to keep track of all the regulations of each card.

We generally charge the card the day of shipment or (often) the day prior. The reason is vendors get a lot of folks who, for whatever reason, cannot complete the transaction. If you've already boxed something up or put a "hold" on your inventory for it, then the CC declines, it throws a wrench into the process. First I charge, then I pull from stock, then I ship.. usually happens within 24 hours most times, but I know we get 15 days from our processor before we are required to ship.

If the CC company blows smoke at you, remind them of their commercial, and threaten to sic Underdog on them. ;)

(I have to keep fighting the urge, when joining a tech conference call, to sing, "Here I come to save the day...")

Sorry to hear of your carlift troubles, Uro.

Autolifters was on my short list, but I had it narrowed down to a Bendpak P6 for final choice.

Purchase now deferred because of funding issues. Instead, I got a good compact aluminum floor jack locally and two jackstands from Griot's.

The fact that you pay YOUR credit card in full means nothing. If your CC paid the vendor you bought and you make payments to your credit car you stillowe the money even if you did not get the goods.

This is why I love AMEX. No claim form to fill out, just a call and they will refund immediately and the vendor has to deal with the burden of proof. I have had so many positive experiences with AMEX in this regard it paid for itself paying the yearly card fees.

I use AmEx for ALL my major purchases. Some of you know the other reason why. :)

I think they were getting squeezed by the Chinese lifts and may have had some loans out against the company they couldn't pay. Trying to make up for the deficit with volume. Typical. Most companies can't afford to have it "Made In USA" hence the the exodus of work to cheap foreign labor.
My employer is doing the same thing with our newest product. The only part we will play is final assembly, testing and delivery.

AMEX is the worst. I had a problem with Martin Chevrolet. They ripped me off on service that I did not order. They held my car for ransom. I paid via AMEX optimia platinum card. Amex sided with the merchant. I canceled AMEX and will never use them again. I am an AMEX merchant too but I pay people back in reduced fees to use anything else to pay! AMEX will screw you the minute you turn your back. I'm no slezzer either. I have pockets full of cards, the highest FICO scores and always pay my cards in full. I tell everyone not to shop Martin Chevrolet or use AMEX. Later I learned how to fight the credit card cos back with the Federal FCRA and FCBA. I'll never get screwed again by shody merchant or CC co.. I hate AMEX. YMMV.

My boss (cardholder for many yrs and always paid on time) cancelled a couple reservations (2 out of the 5 he had reserved) at a hotel he was staying at in Alaska on vacation, a few days before getting there, and within their stated cancellation policy. He stayed at the hotel, for a few days, but they charged him for all five rooms, every day he was there, and he wasn't notified until his bill came.

His argument was, he cancelled within specified timeframe, and even if they were going to charge him a cancellation fee, they shouldn't have charged for the cancelled rooms for every night he was there.

Amex didn't budge. He ended up cancelling the Amex card over it.

So sad to see another American company fall prey to Chinese products. A few years ago, I bought a like new engine stand from a flea market that was made by Excell. They were sold through Sam's Club. The Excell factory was right here in Arkansas. They also made and sold a super heavy duty engine hoist through Sam's Club. I was eventually going to buy one of the hoists. I figured that there was no hurry because you could buy them any day of the week at Sam's. I went into Sam's one day to take a closer look at the hoist and it was nowhere to be found. They stopped selling them. I tracked down the factory in Jonesboro, Arkansas and gave them a call. The factory had been bought out by Porter Cable and they discontinued the engine hoists. I eventually really needed a hoist and a friend found a ....gag.....Chinese hoist on sale so we bought a pair of them. Of course, after about 2 sessions of use, one of the caster wheels fell apart. One of these days I will restore the 1940s vintage American hoist that I bought for $100 from behind an old brake shop.

Back in the 90's I purchased a high value vanity plate (private plate) over here in the UK.

Similar story - vendor went pop. I thought I was going to have to take the hit on the money - happened to call Visa (Barclaycard) who took over the problem and refunded my money.

    You should be fine.

    Fingers crossed pal!
