Not surprisingly it took home some Golden Globes last night. I'm guessing a bunch of Oscars is next. I give it "Best movie".
What was the ticket price when Star Wars was released? $3? Compare that to the $13 (here in BFE America) per ticket on Avatar. I hope you see how the Obama press has distorted reality. OMG Avatar better than Star Wars OMG...
I just heard its a trilogy so we get at least 2 more movies Maybe Cameron will decide to expand after 3
Which isn't that good? Titanic or Avatar? In my opinion Avatar blows Titanic away Jedi, did you see it a 3rd time? I did and was still noticing things i hadn't noticed the previous 2 times
I agree 100% that the RealD presentation looked better (and the 3d looked better too). Glad it wasn't just me
Avatar won best drama at the Golden Globes last night, I wonder if it will even get nominated for the Oscars. On second thought a snub seems highly unlikely, aren't there going to be ten best picture nominees this year? Inglorious Basterds was the best movie I have seen this year, IMO. Better than Avatar (which I did like).
I loved Avatar but I dont think it should be nominated for *Best Picture*...its more of an experience than a great film. Inglorious Basterds was a way better movie...among many others.
finally went to see Avatar the other day after patiently waiting weeks and weeks to see it only to fall asleep ten minutes in and wake up with my girlfriend handing me my jacket and the lights on! and the kicker is, we went to a earlier showing because I was tired and knew I would fall asleep in the later movie...looked cool from what I remember....
Looking at the history of Oscar's "Best movie" category it is often not necessarily the best movie of the year that wins, but a very good one, which stands out as an iconic event of that year. Avatar fits that bill perfectly. My favorite movie of the year was hands down "The Informant", but that's not the kind of picture to be remembered for years to come.
Well, that part I can live with. What bothers me much more about the Oscars is when they give all the awards to the same movie. Lord of the Rings was the worst example of that (a movie I wouldn't have given any Oscar beyond some technical ones). I hope it won't go that way with Avatar. That was great at the Globes: They spread the awards fairly even amongst the nominations.
Not surprised with its success given the way our society now is. People care more about looks than anything. You can be as dumb as a rock and boring, but if you look good, people will still be all over you. Kinda sad.
I made it to the nominations stage for makeup on Gods And Monsters and then because of the way Hollywood politics go we were handed a BS excuse why we had to be disqualified.
I don't and cannot, agree with the argument that Avatar is an 'event' but not a 'great movie'. That's sort of like saying a great novel isn't a great novel, or Beethoven's 9th isn't a great symphony, but just an event. The reason I would argue against that is it is often these rare gems that change the way we view what said format could be, or what we expect from it. It is not to say we can't enjoy books, music or movies that are not the same as whatever the 'event' piece may be, but just that we realize they could be something different or new than what we'd expected from it before. For personal reference, most of what I watch is foreign/black & white. Avatar hasn't changed my enjoyment for Kurosawa or Godard. Rather, Avatar has enhanced my appreciation for the films I love while also expanding my appreciation for what film can be, and where it can go. So, in short, yes I do think that Avatar is a great film for many reasons.
Ummm no...wrong again. Im sorry to interject facts into your diatribe. You dont have to like the movie but making things up is kind of childish.
Sorry for the drift, but I see "Gods And Monsters" is on TMC tonight, 8pm EST. Jerry, do they send you a big check for that?
WOOT ! PAYDAY ! Errr well, not really. Makeup/special effects depts dont get residuals or points. Strangely puppeteers do because they are part of SAG (screen actors guild). I know guys that paid cash for their homes because they operated the T-Rex eyes on Jurassic Park. Ive done puppeteering on some large national commercials and it wasnt unusual to see an additional $15-20k over the year in residuals. Nice passive income. Gods And Monsters is a fantastic film if you've never seen it and have the time. Everyone involved was very passionate about the subject matter and put 100% into the film.
