Once subscribed, send Darth550 an IM and use his avatar service. For only $99.95, he will provide you with a custom Avatar and update it twice at no charge.

 

I think consultants and mods can have avatars and not be subscribed, but I think they all pretty much are. The only other thing I can think of is that when your subscription runs out, your avatar stays and you can't change it. Just a guess. Or if you know a mod, they can put it in for you without paying (maybe).

 

If you subscribe and have an avatar, it doesn't get removed once your subscription expires.
Of course if you delete the one you have and are no longer subscribed, it won't let you upload a new one.
