I live on O’ahu part time. I take my kids to the Arizona about once a year, every year, no matter if they feel like it or not. Boy are you ever right! The memorial is generally packed with Japanese tourists. That memorial does little to sugar coat how bad that attack was. I can’t imagine what that’s like to see for them either. It takes a lot of guts to face that. I can’t imagine going to Hiroshima and walking into whatever memorial they have for themselves there.
I think that I have mentioned it before but I'll do it again because it shows the total lack of geographical knowledge that we had in 1941. i was at a professional football game in Washington D.C. at the time. I think that the second half had just started when they broke in with the PA to announce that the Japanese had attacked PEARL HARBOR. Pearl Harbor? ? ? Soon you could hear voices all over the stands, " Where the hell is Pearl Harbor?" There were uneducated answers from California to Alaska. Nobody knew where Pearl Harbor was. Of course, the game was cancelled and the stands emptied. It has always amazed me that when we reached the street there were already newspaper hawkers with "Extras" about the raid selling them in front of the stadium. Our Isolationism and unworldliness was soon changed and we not only learned where Pearl Harbor was but places like Guadalcanal, Tarawa ,and many others that will forever have the mark of the U.S. military on them.
And it seems like we may be forgetting, not only geography but the sacrifces made by so many. unfortunate
Years ago, I was walking through the Udvar-Hazy museum and went to see the Enola Gay. It was totally surrounded by Japanese tour groups. Looking at expressions of mostly young Japanese, I'm wasn't sure they understood what they were looking at.
