FDA had rejected 8 times this sugar alternative before someone was payed off (IMO) to approve it. http://www.bio-medicine.org/medicine-news/Aspartame-Probe-Call-Rejected-by-FDA-22465-1/ http://www.cspinet.org/new/200706251.html It is commonly found diet sodas and causes stomach bloating, gas, headach and again cancer leaves a terrible after taste.
There were a few supplement companies that took a lot of heat for using aspartame. They took them out. The whole thought of a diet soda has always been funny to me. I can understand caffeine free, but diet coke? If you're gonna drink one, grab the real deal.
I gave up that stuff and i feel MUCH better for it...........The Asparatame i consumed was in Protein powders i purchased from GNC and the effect it had on my body was bloating and water weight gain.(My body is extremely sensitive to carbohydrates anyway).
I remember the controversy when Asparatame hit the market. Before it came out the big sweetener was saccharin. I read up on the issue and decided to avoid both as much as possible. There was a big concern about a link between cancer and saccharin and then this new product hit the market. But, from what I remember, Asparatame was just a derivative of saccharin and used to avoid the media attention saccharin was getting. I don't recall any effects it may have on me. I was just concerned about the effects I didn't notice.
Also avoid Splenda and sugar substitutes. http://www.thefitshack.com/2008/04/29/14-reasons-not-to-use-splenda-ddt-in-disguise/
I am not a dietician, and I do not claim to have read or researched all of the studies. BUT, the Nutrition Action Newsletter (the "fettucini is a heart attack on a plate" folks) have given their approval to Splenda. I have no dog in this fight, and I find (in general) that the Nutrition Action Newsletter strikes me as a vegetarian fascist publication (please understand that I am not demeaning their work--but I do find that they value vegetarian over taste, and as a foodie I feel that they would rank cardboard above anything that tasted good but contained more than .001 grams of sat. fat). As an occasional enjoyer of Foie Gras, they would probably consider me the antichrist. As you might guess, every issue of their newsletter that I receive pisses me off in one way or another (my Mother got me the subscription--she is trying to save me). But I can't dismiss that their science seems to be sound, and I can't argue that following your taste buds (as opposed to your fat grams) may not be the best way to live. The fact that they bless Splenda as safe surprises me, but it also calms me. I'd be interested in other evidence that people can weigh in with.
I used to laugh at people who would talk trash about how bad Aspartame is for you. Then one day I starting drinking Crystal Light instead of water (water gets old). It was not long afterwards that I started getting frequent headaches and random dizzyness. I quit drinking Crystal Light, and the frequent headaches and dizzy spells went away. I'm no doctor and I don't know if it causes cancer or what, but I have a pretty good vibe that Aspartame is not good for you at all. I avoid any artificial sweeteners now if possible.
i used to drink anywhere from 2 liters to 4 liters (us gallon that is isnt it?) of pepsi max for a few years. All of a sudden i got pretty sick for a few days, i laid of the pepsi and never had it again...that was a year ago. I'm not sure if it the illness was because of the amounts of coke i drank but as i said, havent had it again. i do drink it now but not more than 3/4 cans a day. i've been drinking more lately (to about 6) but incidently, yesterday i decided to not drink it anymore for a month and resort to bottled water (need to lose a couple of pounds really lol). I have no doubts that the stuff they put in there makes you ill and is perhaps cancerous...
Honestly I can't understand how people can drink 3-4 cans of soda a day. I never liked soda when I was kid and I still don't drink it now.
I recently gave up drinking soda (mostly Sprite, Lemon-up, and other clear soda). I was drinking about 1 liter a day and decided to stop because I was concerned about my sugar intake. Found these drink mix packets that you add to 0.5l bottles of water for flavoring. The ice/green tea is pretty good. 0 cal, 0 carbs, 0 sodium, 0 sugar.. but it contains Splenda. So I gave up soda to avoid diabetes and now I'll get cancer from flavored water? Can't ****ing win.
LOL! Funny you should mention that. Along with a headshake, I tried that out when reading this thread.
