I would love to have all of these.

I'm not as much of a Playstation fan, and I plan to have multiple CRT TVs for the non HD systems instead of using new digital flat screens (I've tried an NES on a new TV and it looks terrible IMO). But this is generally the idea, and I am jealous of the NEO•GEO, PC Engine and TurboExpress (man I wanted one of those), Ataris etc. Right now I have an NES, Genesis and a Nomad, Dreamcast and both Xboxes.

I wish I still had my Nintendo 8 bit and PlayStation 1... Just for having them as show pieces in the living room...

Thats cool. A buddy and i bought up, and had every single game ever made for the Panasonic 3DO system. Everything was new in the boxes. Got tired of it it all and sold it (cheap) to a family with a few special needs kids, as they were ecstatic to have the system. Seemed the right thing to do.

    That is crazy!
How does one get around to playing everything?
Are things like that actually collectible?

I figure that things like the N64 and all the old set ups will be but not the modern xboxs and PS3s. In that case, I wish I knew where my Sega was.
Prices have gone up on some of the older systems haven't they?

Yes, there's a local vintage game store and they are asking $$ for rare things like working Intellivisions, Vectrex, 1st edition Atari 2600, etc. Even the 3D0 is pricey still.

you'd be surprised I used to make extra income selling games some of them can go for 300-600 each and thats not even sealed then you have hardware which can get to crazy prices especially for limited edition consoles. I've known guys with $30,000 invested in their collections . Business really dried up after the economy tanked though

that said if you have any games etc your looking for lmk :)

I wish I had my Saturn and Atari Jaguar. Jaguar was a dud overall, but it had a few good games.

Saturn I used to party VF2 and Sega rally non stop for weeks.

Neo Geo, and 3DO were impossible to justify the costs, but were what everybody wanted. I think it was the Neo Geo that was an actual system powering some of the arcade games; which was beyond cool.

I never saw an Atari Jaguar, and some of the games looked pretty cool; but generally, reviews for everything was "looks great, but is pretty crappy".

Anybody else remember when the Genesis had the two plug-in mods... 32x, and Sega CD?

The Sega Saturn is the system I wish I had bought, especially with Neverwinter nights being so highly rated. Oh well, I guess the N64 had a few good games :p

Mine rivals that. I have an original Atari Video System, Atari 400, SNES, Playstation 1, Mac, Wii, Gamecube, and Xbox. For the Atari Video System, I must have 60+ cartridges. Atari 400, I have at LEAST 500 floppies, each with 3-5 games per disk.

Of course, my "collection" is in boxes - not neatly stored like that...maybe a project for a rainy day.

Ah you guys are whipper snappers. :D I had an original PONG system. Who remembers the Odyssey? I actually played those in the day...nearly bought one. Then of course, the holy grail of awesomeness was the Vectrex.

I'm an OG gamer...cut my teeth on blocky graphics and "beep-boop" sound effects!!

Mine are also still boxed up since we moved a year ago. I've been looking at stands and configurations to try and set it all up somewhere, at least temporarily. Main problem is that we don't have a den or 'play room' to set it all up in...

That's incredible. I'm sure not everything is visible in the pictures, but I didn't see an Atari Lynx. He's missing a Turbo Graphics. ;)

What is the white machine to the left of the Playstation 1?

I, stupidly, sold my NES and Genesis and all the games I had to put towards a Playstation 1. My dad said he would pay half of whatever I bought cost as it was a birthday present.

I have a blue Sega Game Gear although the last time I tried to fire it up it the screen wouldn't work. Perhaps a bad connector on the board. Game Boy doesn't work either.

Oh you would be VERRRRY surprised.

    http://www.cnn.com/2010/LIVING/wayoflife/04/13/game.sells.for.thousands/index.html

While reading a story on this site about rare video games, Tanner Sandlin of Austin, Texas, recognized one of the games -- Air Raid for the Atari 2600. He found the thirteenth known copy of the game in his garage and put it on eBay.

It sold last Sunday for $31,600, the second-highest price ever paid for a video game.

Sandlin bought the game when he was 11 or 12 years old at a store called Tuesday Morning in Arlington, Texas. The store bought overstocked or undersold goods from other retailers and sold the items at a discount.

Sandlin said he paid between $5 and $10 for Air Raid in the mid-1980s. This is important because none of the other twelve people who possess Air Raid cartridges were the original owners -- they bought them at auction, secondhand stores, or through private collectors. Learning a collectible item's "provenance," or owner history, is key to proving its authenticity. Since Sandlin was the original owner, his cartridge had more credibility than one found in a box at the local thrift store.

Oddly enough, Sandlin remembered that this much sought after game wasn't really all that great. In fact, the only reason he still had it was because it was so bad. He and his friends used to borrow games from each other all the time --sometimes you'd get your game back, sometimes you wouldn't, and that was OK. But no one wanted to keep Air Raid, so it kept coming back to him.

    He's not complaining now.

While it's impressive that Sandlin had the thirteenth known copy of Air Raid, he also had the original packaging, which changed everything. Why? Because his was the only known Air Raid box in the world, making it the only known complete copy of the game in existence.

But he couldn't start counting his fortune just yet. If you're willing to pay thousands of dollars for a video game, you're going to make sure it's legitimate. Sandlin knew this, so he went straight to an expert, Albert Yarusso of AtariAge.com, a forum for fans of anything Atari, to get his professional opinion on the authenticity of the find.

The two both live in Austin, so Yarusso met with Sandlin and examined both the game and the box in person. After some thorough research, Yarusso declared everything was real (or the most impressive forgery he'd ever seen). With expert confirmation behind him, Sandlin pulled his stand-alone cartridge auction on eBay and replaced it with the complete game package. The starting price was $.50.

Sandlin's eBay auction ended on April 10, 2010 at about 10:15 p.m. EST. With only 5 minutes to go, the highest bid was $14,600. It sat at this price until the very last few seconds, when it jumped to $17,528, and then made a giant leap to $31,500. The final bid was $31,600.

This sets a new record price for the game, blowing away the previous record of $3,000. That also makes it the second-highest price ever paid for a video game cartridge, just behind the $43,300 paid for a factory-sealed copy of Stadium Events for the Nintendo back in February.
I asked Sandlin what he intended to do with the money and he wasn't quite sure yet. He did know that he wanted to buy something tangible; something he could point at it and say, "I bought that with a video game!"
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go look for something in my garage.

    Stadium Events (Nintendo Entertainment System)
Price Range: $13,000 -- $41,300; $10,000 for the box alone

Why So Expensive?: Stadium Events was released by Bandai in 1987 as one of the few games available in America that was made for the company's Family Fun Fitness mat, a soft, plastic controller you walked, ran, and jumped on to make the characters move.

Nintendo bought the rights to the game and the Fitness mat in 1988 and re-released them as World Class Track Meet and the Power Pad controller. To avoid consumer confusion, Nintendo pulled all copies of Stadium Events from shelves and had them destroyed, but not before approximately 200 carts had already been sold. Of those 200, collectors believe that only 10 to 20 complete copies of the game exist today, making them a real rarity.

Stadium Events recently made headlines with two high-profile eBay sales. A North Carolina woman was cleaning out her garage and found an old Nintendo and a handful of games, including Stadium Events. She put them up on eBay without high expectations and was amazed to see the bids steadily climb up to $13,105.

While the game itself is valuable, the winning bidder was most interested in the cardboard box it came in. Since most kids threw the box away after tearing open a new game, intact boxes for any game are really hard to come by, but especially so for Stadium Events. Empty Stadium Event boxes have been known to sell for $10,000 alone.

After hearing of the success of this eBay seller, a man in Kansas dug up a factory-sealed copy of the game that he thought was worthless. However, his game became only the second known sealed copy in existence. He'd purchased the game in 1987, but could never find the Fitness mat to go with it. It was still sealed because he'd meant to return it. When his eBay auction ended on February 26, 2010, the game sold for an amazing $41,300.

The same game repackaged by Nintendo, World Class Track Meet, generally sells for less than $3 on eBay.

I'm sorry but I just don't get the motivation behind paying astronomical prices for stuff like old vidgames and comic books...I do get being the owner of such and having crazy men offer crazy prices for what I picked up for $.10 or $10 as a kid.

It's tough to contemplate a millon bucks for a 275 GTB but if I woke up and found myself a multimillionaire I'd pay it. A million for a Spiderman #1 is just plain insane.

I would like to have the car because I am a car guy. I'm sure a video game guy would want the spiderman instead.
It is all about tastes but I have to agree with you. I just would not pay vintage ferrari money for a video game.
I'm sure they're ripping us up on the video game forums for paying a million bucks for a car.

That's essentially it in a nutshell.

I try and bite my tongue when I hear a friend paid "X" for something they're into. If I would spend 6-figures+ on a car why should I care what they spend their money on.

I have no argument with the it's their money to spend aspect...I just don't get it.

The majority of people think paying what would buy a very nice house for a car is insane.

  25. REMIX

I generally feel the same way about cars - NO CAR is worth $1m or more IMO. It's a freaking car. I especially don't get the crazy prices for old Ferraris, McClarens, etc. If I had a billion dollars I still would refuse to pay $1m for any car. Heck $500k is too much.
