Stunning plane, one of my favorites. Any guesses on the price? I don't think I could make a good guess because you don't see something like this for sale often. I'm just pulling numbers, but I'd say 10mm.
What a beautiful bird! It was one of the planes responsible for winning the last great war... and saving England. Brad
I would bet far less than 1/2 of that. Perhaps $2M - $3M ? The bombers do not bring what fighters bring. Far more maintenance, less performance..... Terry
Who can you get to type certify you for a B-17? Then there's the experienced mechanics & spares issue. Beautiful plane, though.

I've heard of fighter jet ownership down in Chino California, such as the MiG's, T-38, A-4 Skyhawk and a few Italian jobies, but a single B-17?? that has to be a group effort!

Thanks for the info Big Al. If I had enough money to buy a small used Lear Jet, I'd rather get this B17 for weekends and use business class on commercial airliners. Move the thread then if that's even possible, LOL!
YES! I NEVER thought they would be possible to own! The most affordable mach 1 jet a civillian can buy. http://www.controller.com/listings/forsale/detail.asp?OHID=1029537&guid=7EFDEAA5E6964C3697FE0234FD23D3DE Factoid: To test the mettle against the(then) new F-15 Eagle, the F-5 proved to be equal in air combat leaving the winner outcome the most skilled flyer in the skies. Only when two F-5's went up against one Eagle did the Eagle lose the fight. However, the Eagle surpassed the little F-5 in avionics technology, strike ordinance and thrust to weight ratio fully loaded.
That is so funny, my dad saw that same plane in an Airshow back in 97 in Elmira, NY, and fell in love with the damn thing. So much that he bought a random model B17 and started painting it with the Fuddy Duddy's paint scheme (still hasn't finished it, BTW), he was wrapping it in really fine aluminum foil to get that metallic look and so far it looks awesome. On a later trip that I took with my wife to Elmira I saw it personally, and I can honestly say that it is one of the most beautiful airplanes I've ever seen.
Somebody here in Vegas owns a newer MiG. He or she keeps it parked on the tarmac at North Las Vegas Airport, and it moves every once in a while, leading me to believe he still flies it.
I flew in a B-17 about 5 years ago. It was truly amazing to fly in a plane like that and try to envision what the crew were doing and thinking durning combat missions. They are beautiful works of art and should be preserved and flown for generations to see.
With the B-17, since that model is not a Civilian certified aircraft, you cannot get a type rating in it. Howerever, you can get a LOA, or letter of authorization, to operate it. Most of the time aircraft like this are certified experimental or restricted and "officially" can only be used for going to and from airshows and for pilot training. Most of the time your not supposed to just fly them around for transportation, mainly because they are not "certified" and blessed with FAA holy water and therefore are assumed to be somewhat unsafe and a danger to the general public, so the use is restricted. To qualify for the LOA, you also have to have a minimum of 1000 hours, and find someone who can train you in it and sign you off for it. Same applies to the MiG's, L-39's, P-51's, etc.
