BA engine trouble

Grumman rejected the use of Dzus fasteners and went with a competing system called Camloc that was considered more secure. I never heard any instance of Camloc-fastened covers working loose in operation.

I flew a DC8-63 from JFK to FRA when the number 2 cowling blew off on take off (it was night). We noticed we were down on fuel at each check point. I started to wonder did I leave the gear down? Flaps? Finally got a selcal from the company that said the Port Authority found debris on the runway. Went back to check on the engines and found the entire cowling gone. thought about shutting down the engine (no fire protection). Finally landed in Luxemburg. Had to replace the engine.

 

So, by the DC-8, Douglas had stopped wrapping a 1/4" cable around the cowling to hold it on like was done with the DC-2 (see Bob's post). haha

 

A little bit O/T, but here is a photo I took last weekend of Clay Lacy flying the Museum of Flight's DC-2 - one of the few still currently flying - over Lake Washington in Seattle. (No, he did not do a barrel roll a la Tex Johnston!)
