Took some time away from the Ferrari world as it was becoming a bit of an unhealthy obsession. Its very easy to get caught up in things and I'm back and motivated to finish what I started on the 8. I spent yesterday in the Adirondacks visiting some friends and doing a little fishing and made a 300 + mile loop. The weather was perfect, the scenery was fantastic and the roads begged for a rear engined chariot. However I was in my Silverado, and began thinking of what I need to do to make the car worthy of a 4hr trip from WNY to ADK. And then a full weekend of driving with my wife. I've come to the conclusion the best option is to remove the engine. The oil leaks are growing and I have the desire to redo the heads, upgrade the valve train, and take care of some small but potentially big issues. One question I have is how much vertical lift do I need to slide the subframe/engine/trans out the bottom? It's going to decide where I'm going to remove it.

I didn't take a precise measurement when I dropped my engine 10 months ago but I know I had approximately 6 in of clearance between the roof of the car and my garage door mechanism. Taking some measurements now, that means at the max height I lifted the car to clear the subframe was approximately 37" from the bottom of the body to the floor.

Please keep in mind though that this was with the Wheels off of the rear subframe and I placed the subframe on a lift table measuring approximately 8" tall. If you dropped the subframe on a shorter wooden frame with casters, you can save yourself some vertical height here as well. It also helps when you remove it to slide it sideways and use the wheel well gaps. This way the car doesn't have to go nearly as high provided the longitudinal width will clear.

Going from memory, I kind of remember 32" in is the height of the engine on the subframe. Since you still have your engine installed, you can probably drop a piece of vertical string from the top of the engine manifold to the bottom of the subframe and get your own measurement.

This picture gave me another idea. I still have my subframe out so I measured from the bottom of the subframe to the top of the shock Tower mount and that is about 27 in. The intake manifold on this QV engine is taller than that but not a dramatic amount. I'm guessing from this picture the Delta is more like 6 in than 12. You can probably easily measure the Delta yourself by popping the engine cover.
