back to the 360 engine

I was out of town for a month and back to the cam cap that had the casting mark not facing the same way as all the rest. I plastigaged it both ways and it was a perfect width of .002 both ways. While looking at the surfaces of the cam and cap I noticed the groove patterns on both. They are very distinctive from side to side and with out a doubt the cam cap came off the way I marked it, different from the rest, casting mark wise. I got all the records for the car except the first 5K miles and it showed no engine repair. Any thoughts?
Also as I do not do much engine work, how much grooving is tolerated?
