Sunday I went to the annual “Back to the Beach” car show in New Orleans. The flyer stated that registration was from 8am-11am, but pre-registration was available. At any rate I neglected to pre register and instead showed up at the gate at about 10am. When I arrived I was told by the event staff that there were no more spaces left and turned away. Now, mind you there were about 5-6 other classics behind me that were also turned away and countless others before 11am (about 20-30). At any rate I figure it’s no big deal and to some degree my fault for failing to pre-register, so I take the free entry ticket they give me, park the mustang outside of the show and head on in to check out the cars. After about 5 minutes of looking my blood is really starting to boil, as I notice that about 1/3 of the vehicles entered are not classics, street rods, special vehicles and/or exotics AT ALL. There were multiple (probably 10-15) brand new vettes (not even Z-06’s mind you) and several stock 2000-2003 Camaros and Firebirds. To make matters worse there were several late model trucks and SUV’s entered into the show that had little more than an in dash T.V. and playstation. In fact one of the trucks entered was a 2005 Dodge, with a scratched up bed, that was OBVIOUSLY a daily driver work truck. Sorry, but some of these “shows” need some type of year/model/make restriction regarding entries. I say that because there was a mid 90’s viper at the show, which I really had no problem with as it is a somewhat unique vehicle that is not seen on the road everyday; in essence a special vehicle. It just REALLY irked me that these fools turned away multiple classic vehicles to accommodate crap that any person could go to a showroom and see or test drive.

The problem is that this kind of thing is becoming more and more prevalent at car shows and cruise nights. Personally, after this experience I am bordering on avoiding these things ALL TOGETHER, unless the organizers have strict entry regulations and limit the entries to custom street rods, classics, exotics and limited production vehicles. Sorry but I see no merit in a friggin Civic or Escalade with “boom” speakers, neon undercarriage lights, and a T.V. in the console. Go have your own show and quit coming to those geared toward classics. Better yet I would like for the organizers to quit admitting these fools, but I guess as long as they make their money off the entry fee they could give a damn.

Am I the only one who tires of this crap?

I would try to contact them prior to going to find out what guidelines there are for entering. This may help you make sure it fits your interest.

If they have a website you can probably find info on their prior shows to help you find out what to expect from their next show.

I can understand your frustration, but on the other token, you have to give those people at the show credit for being enthusiasts.

They had either pre-registered or beat others to the event early morning. So when space is limited, there is nothing wrong with passionate car nuts(even if it is a civic with lambo doors) getting there first and ejoying the day. It is apparent that there were no restrictions on vehicle entry, so there isn't much to say about who does or does not 'deserve' to bring whatever vehicle they like.

Don't tell me you are letting the youngsters wake up before you do ;)

BTW, I would love to see some pics of your car if you have any. We'll support ya! :)

    John,
I get where you are coming from and to that extent I accept my blame. Had I not procrastinated and pre-registered or simply just awakened earlier then the issue of me not being admitted due to space restrictions would never have been a problem. To that end I accept full blame and make no excuses.

I guess my problem is that too many of these organizations put on, what they label "classic" or "exotic" car shows and fail to have any type of entry criteria. Like I said no harm, no foul, I now know that this is a show I should skip in the future. To the same extent I am begenning to feel the same way about cruise nights so I'll probably be skipping most of those as well. I think as far as the car shows go I'll probably stick to taking my car to Crusing the Coast and possibly some of the Mustang club shows. I'll also try to make the FQC this year as a spectator, sadly I've missed it on prior occasions due to work and family commitments.

Here are pictures of my car.

I use to organize car shows in Clinton about 5 years back. did it for about year and a half. The fault is with the organizer. A lot of that has to do with his/her mind set. I explicitally stated that all cars were welcomed, but...as they showed up i would seperate old from new. i did not want a 2005 Vette next to a 53 Chevy, and neither did the 53 chevy owner. Each entrant is money that helps to run the event, so you don't want to turn them away. I did not allow any loud music. AFter a while the show became known as a very laid back and enjoyable show. BY the way great looking stang! I think that you should call ahead, not just to pre-register, but to find out who they are catering to before you plan your next show.

You know sometimes I just cannot be a hater though....I dropped my car at Goodyear yesterday and on a pretty day was walking the twenty blocks or so home.... a very elder gentleman, wearing cowboy hat and jeans, all clean.. stopped me for assistance on the freeway feeder......he had a hand drawn map on a Post It, and a crumpled xerox of a legit Social Security Card..

In pidgeon Spanish and hand gestures I told him the Social Security Office was right around the corner, past the TDCJ Probation and DPS.....and encouraged him with a smile....I hope he made it..

I think it was in his attiutude...gracious.....respectful......thankful...those are all pretty rare in the younger ones....

French Quarter looks like it did pre-Katrina, and debris pickup Uptown is, for the most part, 90% complete. So those parts of town are looking good. Restaurants in these areas are back strong as well. In fact, Brennan's just opened their doors again. But they did have to restock their 36,000 bottle wine cellar

Same chef of 42 years is back though!

And that cigar I saved to give you last year is aging quite nicely :)
