News reports last night imply that it almost didn't make it. Apparently lots of ad hoc and last minute gyrations by humans to save the mission. The Daily Caller report also casts a bit of doubt if everything is working properly on the surface for the exploration phases.

In any event, lots of bragging rights! Go USA!

Meanwhile, the next launch of Artemis, with a crew of 4 to travel around the moon, is scheduled for Sep2025. I wish Musk would beat them with a modified Dragon.

Pretty ironic that someone forgot to take the lens cap off the LIDAR laser. What a waste of effort.

yeah, only needed a checklist and/or double check. It's happened before, (Hubble measure screw up), it'll happen again.

kind of like removing an airliner door plug and then not replacing the bolts.

Mars Climate Orbiter was lost in 1999. An investigation attributed the failure to a measurement mismatch between two measurement systems: SI units (metric) by NASA and US customary units by spacecraft builder Lockheed Martin.

Kilometers and nautical miles, I believe. That one made it around pretty quickly. Pretty big difference at a ratio of 3280.8/6076.1 (0.540)
