Last few times out, I noticed that my 1980 GTSI is backfiring while at idle. Nothing crazy, but a good "Pop" every 30 seconds or so. It has never done this before.

Maybe I'm being a bit paranoid now, but the car does seem a bit "rougher" when begining to accellerate.

What do you think is going on here??

    Thanks!

I forgot to add that it does not backfire when my foot is on the gas, but will if I coast. The car also has a Tubi.

It depends on the nature of the backfire. If it "bangs" out the exhaust, look for an exhaust leak. If it "sneezes" up through the inlet, its something else.

I defer to others here for more info.

Mine did this when I needed new wires and extenders. It would idle with a "pop" out of the exhaust every 30 seconds or so. Have you checked for a fouled plug causing gas to explode in the exhaust system?

Check for holes in the exhaust, I've seen the issue fixed with a sheet metal screw & some JB weld.

Try to take cold start injector (electric) wire out. It is that blue thing pasanger side of inlet plenum.
