Who else really could? Another fantastic performance from Schumi: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEhPHPvXfLY[/ame]
More on Schumi Spa 1997: next few laps Schumacher led by the following: 5th lap - 5.8 seconds over Jacques Villeneuve (full wets) 6th lap - 16.9 seconds over Giancarlo Fisichella (intermediates) 7th lap - 22.8 seconds over Giancarlo Fisichella (intermediates) 8th lap - 28.6 seconds over Giancarlo Fisichella (intermediates) 9th lap - 35.2 seconds over Giancarlo Fisichella (intermediates) 10th lap - 42.5 seconds over Mika Häkkinen (intermediates) 11th lap - 47.2 seconds over Mika Häkkinen (intermediates) 12th lap - 63 seconds over Jan Magnussen (intermediates) 13th lap - 67 seconds over Jean Alesi (slicks) insanity. 6 seconds A LAP faster than anyone else. Schumi on inters, as was fisi & co from the moment he passed villeneuve (lap 5).
+1 Watching him, you just *knew* he was quicker than anyone else, be it wet or dry! Jimmy & Ayrton were the same way; They felt visibly quicker than anyone else - Unless you've experienced it, you can't possibly get it. Only other guy I'd add would be Jackie Ickx in the wet; The long circuit at Brands, BOAC1000, he was *30* (yes, thirty!) seconds a lap quicker than anyone else! Godspeed Michael, Ian
No question on Shoes, peerless . When I saw the header, I thought, Bad car, Great laps. Slowest car of five at the end in raging heat. Great drives by all of 'em, but..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHY6wv0VlsU
+1 "Simply the best. Better than all the rest." I don't really want to stir the hornets nest again, but as previously noted, LH, or indeed any of them are (as yet) unfit to carry his jock. Get well soon Michael, Ian
Sorry Is, my bad! - Gilles was also one of the very, very few in that same class. He could make any POS quick! I guess his lack of a title is what "hinders" his memory, but was he ever fun to watch! Cheers, Ian
With the nature of modern f1 cars as they are I don't think you'll ever see that again - there is simply no scope to be lapping 10-20 secs a lap faster than others
Alonso did some impressive things in Ferrari, but he was there at a time when the car was simply incapable of winning any titles. All the best, Andrew.
You shouldn't forget Pedro Rodriguez in the wet at the 1970 1000km of Brands Hatch, with the JWAE Gulf Porsche 917. The race was run in a torrential rain from start to finish. After the second lap, Rodriguez -then second - was black-flagged for having passed a car under yellow flag. He stopped in the pit to be reprimented by the Cleck of the Course, losing at least 20 seconds. When he resumed the race, he was in 12th position. Rodriguez hadn't seen the yellow flag and was insensed to have lost so much time. To cut a story short, from then on, Pedro drove the race of his life, caught up with all the field and continued his charge. Everybody started to take notice of his skill and speed in the rain. He won the race by FIVE LAPS from the second, never obeying the pit signs from his team to slow down. From memory, never a race had ever been won by such margin, and in the wet too.
True. But, Michael joined the Scuderia when they were in even worse shape..... OK, he bought Ross & JT along, but he, pretty much singlehandedly, turned the whole mess around. Get well soon Michael, Ian
Was at that race! The 917 was quite simply head & shoulders quicker than anything else as I recall. And, as you say, Pedro pedaled it round pretty well.
Daredevil in an F1 car...could definitely wring the neck of any car and make it do more than it was built to do.
No one puts in a great lap in a BAD car in F1. Car set up is essential for tire traction and steering balance. Period.
No the 917, but Pedro Rodriguez!! He completely annilihated all the Ferrari 512s, but also the other drivers in 917, including his nearest rival Jo Siffert. Nobody could hold a candle to him on that day. Winning by FIVE LAPS !! Perhaps one of the most complete victories in motor racing.
+1 And isn't that a large part of why we watch? Be it Jimmy, Ayrton or even LH (even Nico it seems these days!) - That ability to "wring it's neck" is what separates the good from the great IMO. Cheers, Ian
Indeed...though he is still cutting his teeth and has much to prove, I'd also say that young Max has already shown to be that type of driver
