    Well, sort of (I think)!

As I understand it there is a basic standard (for want of a better term) viscosity at operating temperature.

A 40W oil will reach that viscosity at a lower temperature than will a 60W (though clearly there is also going to be overlap).

Therefore engines that run at higher temperatures require 60W oil.

If you put 60W oil in an engine that's supposed to run on 40W (as these V8s are) then, theoretically, its never going to reach normal operating viscosity. But it all amounts to the same thing, at a Mondi's operating temperature it should be thicker.

Maybe on a really hot day if you thrash it up a mountain you could recreate the problem because then the 60W oil might then thin down to reach normal operating viscosity.

I am probably missing something here but dont the valve stems have oil seals which prevent oil getting into the guides?
If the sound appears to be oil-related and in the vicinity of the valve guides (as seems to be the case) is it not likely to be the actual seal making the noise (ie not really any problem) as thats the part which is in contact with the oil?

Much like rubbing a finger on a glass, it will make a sound at certain speeds (ie low speed) and certain degrees of dampness.

Cheers for your thoughts Guys and yes I am trying to put it out of my mind, but then I feel I owe it to the Folks here to get to the bottom of the problem.
Andyww you are dead right. But here's my theory, supposing the guides are made of the wrong metal and they are not self lubricating then they would make a noise, then supposing the seals do let just the smallest amount of oil past to lube the guides, but not so much that one...
Well you can see where I'm going with this.
However there is a flaw in my theory and that's why is the sound only coming from no.4 exhaust valve area and none of the others?
BUT having eliminated the camshaft and the follower what else is there?
308 Milano is right I should enjoy my car now and I am, honestly. I also don't drive it gently, I drive it with respect but I do drive it fast and with max RPM gear changes when the fancy takes me or when Emily gives me that look....the one that says, go on give it some stick!
That said, a puzzle is a puzzle and I hate not knowing answers ha ha.
Maybe when I have some time..
    Cheers, Bell.

PS. To the Gent who contacted me with the exact same problem after rebuild,
I'm not sure if you are getting my PMs, please get in touch, in confidence.
    Regards Bell.

It sounds (no pun intended) like we will just have to patiently wait until that time comes when you're ready to tear into it. In the mean time I must say your threads are a pleasure to watch, read and participate in. Many happy miles with lots of smiles. Keep those fingers crossed.
