Thanks for your additional message and photo. I was wondering if you were in Portugal but Spain is a little further south and is a much bigger country! :D

It looks like your dealer quoted you how much the labour would have cost if you had to pay for what the time they took. However, you also mentioned the cautious nature of the inspections and the many days the dealer spent discussing the prospects of complete replacement of the DCT with the factory. I suspect the discussions would have taken much less time if the warranty was not involved. So quite possibly it would have cost much less time in labour if you were paying for the work instead of the factory. You may also want to ask your dealer for the basic labour rate they charge per hour.

I hope you get your car back soon but at least you have a longer driving season than we (generally) do here in Eastern Canada.

Somebody asked me on the forumn if the car shifted smoother with the replacement trannie. The answer is yes. Its a lot smoother from first to second gear and does not seem to stumble in search for gears. Alot better. NEXT. Dealer found the a/c was not working correctly. They replaced the front switches that were sticky anyway. Cost $2,750.00 plus tax. Thats why you buy a warranty. If I had to pay for this out of my pocket, the total job would have been about $28,000.00 plus tax.

It's simply amazing how Ferrari gets away with parts pricing. I was at a friends truck shop and he services and sells Volvo transports. I saw 3 transmissions on the floor waiting to be picked up for cores. Cost of a brand new 18 speed fully automatic transmission in a 2014 Volvo transport truck? 23k Canadian funds. It's a huge unit obviously.

Ferrari charges 25k USD for a dinko gearbox in a light weight sports car? I'll bet the tech in that truck transmission far out shines the tech in a dtc Ferrari gearbox, never mind material costs. Never mind the truck those transmissions came out of had over 1 million miles on them.

It really opened my eyes to the serious price gouging Ferrari does, not only to consumers, but to the very dealers they rely on to sell their product.

    MORAL OF THE STORY
Unless you are in the business of fixing these cars yourself, never buy a used later model Fcar without some sort of warranty that covers the expensive risky parts. Then make sure you put some miles on the car, watch for any issues that turn up and inform the dealer about them without delay.

OTOH, if you bought the car new and you know the car, it's partly up to how well you understand your car and the California model in general. It also depends on how many miles you drive your car in a season and the kind of driving do you do.

Michael, I completely agree with you and it's insane not to have always some kind of warranty which covers at least the DCT and engine eventual problems and that applies to any Ferrari. In the last couple of months I've been searching to buy an F 12 and more or less there are around 70 cars available for sale in Europe and all the 2012 haven't any more the original warranty. The majority of these 2012 F12 don't have either an extended warranty and because they are cheaper than the rest some buyers are very tempted to buy. Not me, the lesson I've learned with my Cali will last for a lifetime and for me a Ferrari without an extended warranty is absolutely out of question....

I disagree, with a twist though... I own 5 cars out of warranty including 2 Ferraris. Over the years the warranties would have cost me factors of what the repairs have been...

My recent experience makes me think exactly the opposite, the extended warranty cost for 1 year is where I live less than 3000 USD and the repair of the gearbox issue my Cali had recently will end with a final bill around 11000 USD. Just with one single repair the bill will be close to the cost of a four years extended warranty.

May I ask if you were the original owner of your 5 cars or were they bought used?

Tom, PM Steve (SAFE4NOW) at Boardwalk in Dallas ... he has special prices for F-chat members. I bought an extended 2-year for my 2013 for a lot less than I could have locally (mine was at the end of the original factory warranty so I was able to extend).

I bought a Ferrari Certified car, so I have a one year warranty with about 8 months to go, but I'll bug Steve for info the next time I see him. No reason to procrastinate. Thanks!

My dealer quoted me $4500 as well. You will also need an inspection prior that which runs about $600 if the warranty has lapsed.

Thank you sir! Happy to help.

You have an e-mail responding to your questions sir!

Something to consider, if your warranty expiration aligns with your annual service ( it should ) you could ask your Dealership to consider the annual service as the New Power Warranty inspection. What I mean is: Alot of what it completed on the New Power Warranty inspection is covered by the annual service.

I offer that option when I can.

    Legacy issues are a bit@h.

But the fact of the matter remains that there isn't much financial
incentive to improve parts after the spec of a new model is set.

In other words the problems you are discussing were baked into the 2009 finalized design of the 2010 Cali.

However, please know from a former Cali owner that the DCT gremlins are
Getting sorted out. My current ride , a 2014 458 spider, has had zero issues with the DCT over 63 k miles!

Inspections must be performed at a ( any ) Ferrari Dealer.

If the car is currently under warranty, it does not need another inspection.

Only if the car is out of factory warranty and is not currently covered by New Power Warranty, will it need an inspection performed. There is a specific check list as well as the annual service must be up to date. If you have the 7 year GMS program, that is easily confirmed.

Pursuant to the discussion in this & other Cali threads, I got this booklet today from the good people at Boardwalk Ferrari. It's worth a read if you're thinking of extending your warranty. Covers what is/isn't covered.

I'd highly recommend giving it a read, if you're interested.

Tom, not sure if you saw this already but Vic posted a PDF copy of the NEW POWER WARRANTY brochure in this earlier message in a separate thread about roof failures.

Steve, I don't know if that was your personal experience but I contacted my Toronto dealer months before my car's original factory warranty expired and was informed that the inspection is required even for cars still covered by the original factory warranty.

I was surprised so I asked them to confirm this before my car went in for the inspection. I said:
"... I want to have the warranty inspection done regardless but I believe it is only required for the Power Warranty program and is not required if I am simply extending the original factory warranty. I have been provided with a copy of the Ferrari factory sales brochure which describes this..."
    My dealer replied:
"...Whether it's for a Warranty Extension or Power Warranty an inspection is always needed. Without the inspection check lists Ferrari will not add the warranty. This applies to all customers and our sales dept as well..."
It wasn't a big deal for me because I wanted my car to be inspected anyway. The inspection specifies replacement/repair for any parts that do not meet specifications. So in effect, I used the inspection to verify the condition of my car and to have any problems taken care of by the original factory warranty. Here is the cover page of the inspection report which goes on for another 6 pages. There were no issues with my car.

FWIW, I opted not to have my warranty extended. My driving season is only about 6 months and my car is not a daily driver. A 1-year warranty extension with taxes would cost over $9500 CAD, 2-years extension with taxes would cost over $14,300 CAD.
