Getting new shoes for the 330...don't want to stick weights on the outside, but with the offset they have, concerned about getting a good balance...what do you guys do?

    thanks in advance! Frank

Motorcycle "wrap around the spoke" weights on the outside.

I have them use stick on weights but only on the inside of the wheel. A good balance shop will vary how far inside or out to stick the weight. Not a perfect solution but I have absolutely no shudder in my Daytona at speed.

thanks guys...they've got a fancy million dollar machine that does a road force balance and is very exacting...the tech is just concerned it can't be made as exact as my twin turbo wheels due to offset...but should be able to tape inside and get fairly close..

A lot of tire shops give the customer a song and dance routine about "can't put the weights on the inside because of offset" - this is total bs.

The reason they don't like to put weights on the inside of the rim is because they typically (depending on the machine) have to remove the wheel from the machine to place the weight on the inside of th rim, and then reposition the wheel and check the balance (inevitably having to remove the wheel again to improve the balance). It slows the process down no doubt and is more work but to suggest that offset is a problem is a lie. In fact, the weight on the inside of the rim is typically more in the middle of the rotational mass of the wheel, which is the relevant data point, not offset of the mounting face.

Tape on in the inside will be fine...the only way to get wire wheels exact is to balance them when mounted on the hub and on the car. I wasted a lot of time doing this on the Vintage Race Ferrari's until I noticed the drivers were flat spotting the tires going into turn one on lap one and nulifying the effort.

The new computer machines will tell him exactly how much if he programs in the location he wants to use. Watch the weight to caliper crossover tube clearance, some wheel/caliper combinations bring things quite close

understood Cliff...but my guy is all about doing things right...He dismounted tires from my Twin Turbo wheels twice to dial in a exact balance...these new road force machines are incredibly accurate...you can use any minute imperfection in the tire to counterbalance any imperfection in the wheel..anyway, the Borrani's have such a offset, also need to be concerned with the weights brushing the calipers...

I agree Dave...I'll post results when finished...it's unbelievable how we used to balance wheels/tires vs. today....I think Kevin at Autoscope said the new machine was $40k..you set the wheel in the cradle and it picks it up, puts it on the side, and lines it up..all while barely touching anything.
