According to spanish press, Banco Santander, SF’s premium partner, quits supporting the spanish football league to intensify and reinforce it’s support of it’s local driver, Carlos Sainz.

Saving up to 20M EUR, they would intensify their presence in Ferrari’s F1 team aspiring to further steer the team’s politics in favor of said Sainz.

Sottovoce, and not without a sense of irony, some sources from Santander comment that if they could, they would have Sainz driving the two cars simultaneously.

Never underestimate the power of sponsors ! They work in the shadow, but are very influencial, more than the media or the public.

Maybe they should focus on LEC. While there were stories going around that the Ferrari mechanics didn’t celebrate Sainz’s win at Silverstone, here’s the whole pit lane celebrating Charles’ win in Austria:

I do find Carlos to be closer to Charles than expected, but Leclerc is on it every weekend. Like Max and Schumacher, to beat Leclerc as a teammate, Leclerc doesn't just need a bad day, you also need to be on your top form (or have Ferrari's strategy work their magic). ,

With F1's popularity rising recently it's a smart move on Santanders part.

Ferrari giving him a better car than McLaren, it has allowed Carlos Sainz to show his potential.

What makes Carlos less performing than Leclerc is that he isn't so consistent.

The same could be said about Perez and Bottas against Verstappen and Hamilton, BTW.

“News.” It’s all click baiting and b.s.

Anyhow, serious question: aren’t there plenty of corporations that are willing and able to replace Santander (or any other for that matter) as a sponsor out there? Specially for a team with the historic and well established brand name as Ferrari. I have a hard time believing a sponsor can push Ferrari into something it really doesn’t want to do.

Santander ONLY sponsors Ferrari when it's a Spanish driver--->Alonso with Ferrari and now Sainz with Ferrari.

PMI(Philip Morris International) controls the ad space on the car. I believe Santander is a tier 1 sponsor in the Ferrari hierarchy of sponsors.....so big bucks.

Sadly for Alonso it didn't work out that way at McLaren.
Ron Dennis took Santander's money but it was Uncle Ron in Hamilton's corner all the way.

I guess the serious question is; what role a significant sponsor will play in the day to day running of the team?

Is it particularly pertinent when one of the drivers was responsible for that sponsor coming in?

I would imagine there is nothing in the contract to say that they have the right to influence decisions, and maybe even the opposite, but "he who pays the piper calls the tunes" is a well established truism.
So although Santander won't be as influential at Ferrari as, say, Old Man Mazapin was at Haas, is there an unwritten understanding that Carlos needs to be allowed to win races?

Also, how important is Spain (and hence a beloved driver Home Boy) to Santander?
Only 30 % of the groups customers are in Europe (41% in Lat Am) and that 30 % includes the UK in which Santander are a top three banking group, in a bigger market than Spain (source annual report).

Despite that, I suspect that their Spanish Identity/Culture is still important to them, and has helped them grow in Latin America. So yes they probably want to see Carlos given at least equal status. That wont be in writing, but in the end they can vote with their feet and follow Carlos if he becomes disaffected and leaves.

Sainz , erroneously in my opinion, does not consider himself a number 2 talent.
Would he have tried to chase down Chuck (coping with a damaged throttle) at the weekend?
    I suspect so.

Bring back Clay Reggazoni I say !
