A very good friend of mine at university is Thai and her family still lives out there. Her mom currently requires regular hospital treatments (I didn't ask what for) and my friend is very worried about the crisis disrupting medical services. In light of that, I thought it would be insensitive to ask her what her thoughts and sympathies were on the wider crisis so just took her out for a consoling coffee instead.

It seems to me that the underlying tensions that sparked the crisis have not been resolved to the satisfaction of either side. Until they are addressed effectively, I fear that the cessation of open conflict in Bangkok will merely be viewed as unfinished business by both sides... the Redshirts will see it as a lost battle to be avenged and the Yellowshirts will view the Redshirts as needing further punishment for the violence.

With both groups backed by those vying for power, I fear what will happen to ordinary Thais caught up amongst the fight.

    All the best,
    Andrew.

A good Thai friend of mine just spoke to me about this today too. She's really upset and worried about her friends and family back home. I hope all of our Thai Fchatters are safe.

I go to Bangkok 2-3 times every year, I have an apt in Chidlom.
What's happening right now, makes me not want to go back there.

I feel bad for the gogo girls, what are they gonna do to make a living now, sigh ....

Thx guys for concerning. Never thought this kinda incident could occur here. Terrorists setting fires and riots erupt in some area in the capital. Thai armforces is trying to calm things down and protect civilians' lifes and property. BTW, we all are safe so far. The chaos is almost under control after a night of curfew. Now, Thai govt has been working hard to bring back peace, hope, and normal life back to people....

    Lets prey...God bless Thailand

i stayed in the heart of the problem area the very weekend it was shut down ... it WAS like a war zone. but i obviously did not see the worst of it - as it is now.

i can only hope & pray that the thais work this out without any further loss of life.

Wish all my Thai friends & The King well.

Well, I have to agree with the writer about the succession but there are no strong contenders from politics & Royal household.

To maintain stability, more drastic measures have to be executed swiftly.

If you guys are interested, you can study the rise & fall of Thaksin to understand (not just google but from the locals as well). The drug war, south, farmland deals etc.

It's not going to be a smooth road for recovery due to the divided factions & those lost lives are saddening. A few of my friends' businesses & livelihood have suffered due to the past year long problems.

    God bless Thai-land.

The violent protesters setting fires to buildings should had been shot on the spot. Their actions are no different from terrorists. Burning down the stock exchange, banks and largest dept store is a threat to national security. That is not protesting.

Honestly, I've never imagined this terrible riots could ever happen in Thailand. Today I can feel and see "Hate" among rich vs poor under pined in Thai society. Being taught & fooled for years, those people will never feel mercy or guilty to set up fire, burn others' property, burglarize shops, kill civilians, etc. They just only feel lacking and don't want others having neither...PITY

Don't wanna be too pessimistic. Somehow, I kinda not believe Thai Govt could sort out easily. Personally, Hate is deeply rooted into their brains for long. Education and Income distribution might be what Govt should provide to all citizens thruout country within the coming years. "Hope" is what we need, but we have to learn to accept the fact as well.
Wish "Hate" will not be seen among Thais anymore, but turning to luv, harmony, and unity at last.

    GOD BLESS THAILAND
