If you fly a drone over someones property without their permission it's kinda not a good thing.

A cool article and I've always wondered what's still left out there under some bushes..

But invariably some guy asks you on the street "is your car for sale?". Usually the reply goes something like "DO YOU SEE A FOR SALE SIGN ON IT?" However when I'm in those rare moments when I'm bored and want to chat I might reply with: "sure everything has a price right.. how much you offering?"

Every. Single. Time. The price is so awfully low and under market that I have to laugh out loud at them. I have no problem if they offered fair market value, but it's always wasting 30 seconds of my time.

that is not restricted airspace. This includes your neighbors house, property, etc.

The only rules on drone use are:
    1. The operator must maintain visual line-of-sight to the drone
    2. Can not exceed 400ft agl
    3. Can't fly into restricted airspace (military, 5 miles around airports, heliports, etc.)

It's not much different than flying one's Cessna 150 around and taking photos out the window.

There is just some weird perception that drones are evil, scary and have some insane ability to spy on people. In reality, they have fixed cameras, with little to no zoom ability. Joe Redneck flying his 150 with a zoom digital camera has more spy capability.

Tell that to people in my area in Texas who are shooting down each others' drones. :)

I fly a drone, nothing very sophisticated - DJI Phantom 3 Standard.

I fly for fun, and always in a large open park/soccer complex. But, never, ever when any form of organized activity is happening.

One day, I had a shirtless guy, walking with a big stick, start yelling at me that I was violating "his airspace". At the time, I wasn't even flying high. I was about 10ft above the ground, practicing flying without the autopilot (circles, figure 8's, landings, takeoffs). This guy continued to yell at me for about 3-4 minutes - until I put the aircraft on autopilot, and set it to hover at 100ft. Then I set the controller down, stood up (I was sitting on my tailgate), and stared him down. That seemed to unnerve him, and he turned around and walked off.

I've had lot's of people come up to me in the park, and ask me about the drone. I usually, politely explain what the a/c is, how it fly's. I let them see the video screen. If they are adults, I offer to let them control the aircraft. 99% of the time they are decent people whom just are curious. Letting them see, and handle the controls, shows them how limited these things are, and how they are really just fancy toys.

Some people are curious about the rules and regulations - I always take time to explain. I also show them my "FAA Permit". And, mentioning that I am a licensed pilot (for real aircraft) always intrigues them even further. I've had lots of good interesting conversations with the park go-ers.

Until this one whacko. For some reason, drones just seem to bring out the worst in some people.

When we lived in Plano, we used to fly ours at Hoblitzelle Park. We lived right across from it. We've had them for years and same as you, don't fly them over the neighborhood. We haven't had any strange experiences though. We need to bring a couple to Pensacola Beach and get some good arial shots of the beach.

    Indeed!

Hard part is finding a time where the wind is calm. Here's a quick video from my side of the intracoastal last summer. I shot it with my Parkzone Micro Icon A5 using a cheapo 808 keychain cam from Amazon. Not the best video quality and it was a windy day so it tossed the little 3 oz micro A5 around a bit. If you squint hard you can see your place in the distance. Aerial shots from your place would be very interesting with that tidal creek system beside you and the gulf nearby. Please post it up if you get any!

I thought I read that you had to have permission to fly over private property. I fly too but always seek permission in writing and have it on me in the event there is some sort of problem.

I know exactly where that is. Great spot!

It probably won't happen until next year. We're not headed back to Texas until Oct. and I can't do any on Portofino property. We got a newsletter about that. They're not allowed. I don't mind that part. There's an expectation of privacy when you're 17 floors up. I don't think I'd appreciate a drone looking in my glass walls. :) But I'd love to get some over the Gulf and at Fort Pickens. That would be cool.

Violating any kind of privacy is pretty much NOT good.

Gonna say? Every day that I decided to walk home from school (2 mile + walk) during "High School."? I passed a car that was under a simple fabric cover. This was/is a genuine Porsche 904. Lots of folks in Geneva, IL had money, and lots had some VERY interesting cars.

Would also say? A local car dealer at the time owned, and had on display a 288 gto, he had a pitiful Maserati Mexico in the back room, and was for a time an authorized dealer with a Pantera GTS on the floor.

Just my personal view, I'd not like anyone snooping around my home or property, drones or not. If it were to occur and I was able I'd knock it down.
It is a pretty good chance when dealing with someone having an "abandoned" object worth lots of money hidden away(they know what they have)they are a bit eccentric and you engage them at your own peril.

If someone flies their drone over my property and I shoot it down/runs out of power and it falls ON my property, you can bet 1) I don't know what happened to your drone. 2) No, you don't have permission to be on my property and if I find you on my property I'll have you arrested for trespassing.

I might be "legal" but I still wouldn't do it. I fly mine exclusively in my front yard or over a public space/road.

It is a federal offense to shoot down a drone. Also depending on your state laws, it may be illegal to discharge a firearm within so many feet of a house or structure.

I like how the article talks about "barn finds" public street finds are legal, google cant go down private street and roads..and drones over my airspace will have an accident...
Which goes back to my initial statement none of these search criteria listed will find anything inside a barn.....
