In light of todays events that unfolded lets open it up for discusion: here is the article from espn.com http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1937594 Ive been around baseball my whole life. My dad works for the Twins and worked for several other teams in many high up jobs like general manager. I have met many many players. I even had the pleasure of meeting Barry once or twice at some all star games. As a person he is a nice guy, very nice. As a player, he is incrediable. I for one dont belive that he did it. Before each game Barry would arrive at the field three or four hours earlier then the team to get extra hits in. He then would return to the hotel and ride the bus with the team. Then practice his hitting again. As a baseball player i know that this is the only way to perfect a swing. This is why i refuse to belive that he did sterioids. He may just be saying he did to stop all the bad press about him, i dont know, but i for one refuse to belive he juiced.
Sorry. See, this is exactly the problem. Kids look up to these guys, and they let them down. Some role models, huh?
Patrick, Being from the Bay Area, he is treated like a god around here by the media, which is fine. He has brought a lot of good attention to SF baseball. But saying that, there are more then a few here who think otherwise to your statement. Going to a lot of Giants games I have seen first hand what shows to be a premadona (sp/word?) attitude. He is the only player on the team that will walk or slight jog out to his position or back in to the dugout. He is also a player that never runs through first base. It may sound like little things, but those are key elements you learn, as I assume you know, in playing ball. You always put forth your best effort, no matter what the score. He constantly does not do this and seems to be there only for the showmanship. I have worked with his "people" on many issues regarding cars he owns. They are the hardest "handlers"(as we call them) to deal with. Many other sports people use our dealership and some even show up to drop off cars themselves. He has said that he never knowingly used anything, which I believe to a point. Giambi clearly stated he did, and I think by doing so may hurt his career, but he is a man that is responsible for his actions. I do not like Barry at all. He attitude is what is wrong with sports, today, it is only about him. These are team sports, not individual sports and the shoe contracts and what not are making their heads a lot bigger then they need to be. my .00233434 cents
I respectfully and completelydisagree with Rich. Barry Bonds and Ken Griffey are probably the least showman ship players. Because these guys are quiet, and not always in the media spot light, people think they are being arrogant, which is not the right of looking at it. If you want to see arrogant, look at Jose Canseco.
From the article it sounds like he placed a lot of trust in his personal trainer, someone who apparently betrayed him various times. I imagine more of this story will unfold over time. At this point it's too early, so I'm withholding judgment for now. However, it's not uncommon to read about celebrities getting burned by money managers, lovers, hired help, etc. Sometimes in the end they come out being more of a hero once the matter is resolved. I just hope Barry realizes ala Martha Stewart that it's not nice to lie about anything. Plus don't waste time trying to play the American public as fools, ala Bill Clinton by saying he did not have sex with that woman...
Clinton lied under oath to EVERYONE and got away with it. oh yeah. bonds stopped using anything he was taking before they were made illegal. so... he did nothing wrong
It depends upon from which standpoint you are viewing it. He may not have broken any civil codes but he DID cheat in order to play better for selfish reasons, ie. setting records. His single season record of 73 HR's is tainted! If he sets the all time HR record, that one will be tainted as well. DL
Got a call today. Someone asked me if I'd like to be one of the attorneys in a class action against him and the Giants for fraud. Said maybe. Need to see the complaint before I decide. I don't know if this warrants a suit, but it could be interesting. I don't know if I want the bad press though. Art
i had a huge response, but i will sum it up. you are allowed to be wrong a few times a day. Here is one of your mistakes.
p.s.- junior i like. he is a class act. He is a team player. jose is and was a joke, who could pound the **** out of the ball.
The trainer-player relationship is maybe even bigger than player-manager relationship in baseball. As for him not being a role model, totally disagree. He is one of the greatest players to watch play. This season u saw not runninig to bases, that because no one would pitch to him. He had something like 128 intentional walks, 128 INTENTIONAL WALKS, he just was pissed that he wasnt being given good pitches to hit.
Despite the fact I'm a Giants fan, I still believe that the true home run king is Roger Maris. As for Bonds and McGuire, I just don't believe that they could have broken the record without the steroids.
you have that right. i was not talking about this year. I was talking back at candlestick, back in say 94 .....the times when he came to the giants. when he realized his dad was still a star in these neck of the woods and he could get away with a lot. I saw a lot of barry bonds play, as my dad had a luxury suite and we spent a lot of school nights doing homework at candlestick. I have met a lot of players and have known for a while the difference between a team player and one that is not. He plays for himself. Others, such as Griffey or Sosa, play for the team, then the stats. The game and the team are more important to them then themselves. Barry deserves this, the game of baseball does not.
