After doing some spring cleaning I came across my old baseball cards from when I was a kid. It looks like I probably have somewhere around 1,000 cards dating from 1976-1985. How do I find out how much they are worth and where would I sell them? I do not get that excited about looking up the values on each card so are there places that will do that for me?

    Thanks!! Matt

WOW.... the good ol' days! I still have all my cards up at my Mom's place.I have around 20,000 cards.

Back in the day Beckett put out books listing all the values of individual cards. Could start there. However, take those values with a grain of salt. Card stores normally give you a fraction of the listed values..... 35% I think.

Matt, if you go to Beckett's web site you can actually set up your own collection and monitor the values. The basic setup is free, but you can still get a good idea of "ballpark" values. I've got about 20,000 cards on there. FYI, don't get TOO excited. There's not a lot of interest in the market right now.

Call Dave at East End Sports Cards and take them to him. Tell him I sent you he is an old friend of mine. The 70's cards might have some value if they are in good condition. 80's there are a couple of cards that are worth something but most are not they printed a ton in those years.

Also I'd like to state that the baseball card industry is a wackfest. My father has a large collection (100,000+) that I've been trying to off, and just getting a solid price on the cards is a nightmare in itself. Everyone has their own opinion, and the cards sell for unbelievable prices, sometimes +-1000% of the Beckett price. It's quite sic really.

It's a damn shame because baseball card collection is/was a great American past time, but now, ever since 9/11 it's gone to hell in a hand basket.

Sadly the card market has been going down. I still think baseball card collecting is more of personal thing in terms of value. I have thousands of cards. I will NEVER get rid of them.

As I explained to my wife the other day, card prices started their nosedive after ebay came along. The law of supply and demand and all that, coupled with oversupply of everybody and their Grandmother acquiring 80's cards as complete sets in boxes, most never to see the light of day, and superpremium packs with promises of gold in them thar hills - and many a card shop already stuffed to the gills with duplicate 50's-60's star cards, let alone commons - that none of the young dudes cared about.

I've got a few T-206 Tobacco cards from 1909 - if any card series is collectable, I'd say this is it. Not the most valuable, but the most beautiful card I have is the one of Jake Stahl with a glove (another card from same series of 350 had Stahl without a glove) - the front of the card simply reads: Stahl - Boston Amer. from a pack of Piedmont Cigarettes. Incidentally, some of these cards were from series of 100, others 350, others marked 350-460. No details are listed on the cards, but, he was a first baseman wearing what passed for a glove back then. Condition it's in (PS3), worth 60. If it was PS5, it'd be 150 - not much of a difference in condition, except to a collector. At the end of the day, all I know is... I traded some '68 commons for it and it's other pals... it's got soul... and it's mine.

Also have some Goudey "Big League" cards from '33 (Mickey Cochrane amongst them) - all of which are thrashed, IMHO, yet, even with commons in same condition, still manage to be "worth" $25+ each. They're also "painted." Also have 50's Bowmans (again, "painted"), 65-69 Topps up the ying-yang, a scant amount of 70's cards & a few then speculative 80's Fleer boxes, Topps and so on. I'd stopped collecting in '69 - traded 60's commons for early 20th cent. cards, '33's and Bowmans while bored and recuperating from an accident in '80, picked up balance during summer of '85, IIRC.

Earlier in that same summer, at a family reunion I gave a dozen nephews a card from each of the aforementioned years - 1909-11, '33, '58, '65-'69, a few from '80's - the only stipulation was that they never trade or sell the cards, or I would have to kill them. When I said, "Please, God, don't make me kill again" into the mic - the look on their faces made those cards priceless, and it was well worth it.

Now, I'm only guessing by your icon you're a U-City man through and through - check out the one second from the left http://www.martyspsagradedcards.com/t206-25.jpg - you can get that "common" in that good a condition for 25 bucks and other "commons" from same series for 10 bucks, but, a bit mangled, little brother. Players with reputes start at 30 on up, and are available. No matter, I'm thinking of parting with certain other cards which ceased to interest me a gong, gong time alo.

So, as a point of interest to you, if you wanted to focus on collecting saaaaaay, a certain National League St. Louis team (that'd be the only visiting team I'd go see at Dodger Stadium when I lived in L.A.) - you'd be off to a good start by getting rid of the evildoers from other teams and going straight for (and probably into) the Red.

Here's the card that takes me to another time and place... in a hurry.

no kidding, you have a jap barbeau card? my grandpa used to tell me stories of him when he was with the cardinals, not the greatest player but some of those stories were just plain hilarious.
i was given the opportunity about a year or so ago to view in person a honus wagner t206 "tobacco" card, simply stunning, for something that is noticeably smaller than today's cards, and to be the most valuable card ever is just amazing.

I've got the Stahl card displayed. Don't have Barbeau - just pointed link at it. As fate would have it, you have a personal connection to that 3rd Baseman's card. Go get one, man!
One VG-EX 4 is on eBay right now at $31 with 28 hours left -
