I work for a chain auto parts/service/retail store. I have a new cashier who has expressed desire to move up in the company. I was wondering if any one can recomend a good basic automotive book. She does not have any expeience with cars, and while we could just give her parts look up training I was wondering if there is anything better and more encompassing. My company carries Haynes books but I don't see any title that really fit's this description.

A basic book I have is Auto Fundamentals, by Martin W. Stockel, Martin T. Stockel, & Chris Johanson, published by THe Gooheart-Willcox Company, Inc. Also, a smaller book titled How Cars Work, written by Tom Newton, from Black Apple Press.

Have her research internal combustion motors on Wikipedia. It's free and probably both easier to read and more detailed.
