As I was doing some brake work on my 308 (1976 European vetroresina), I noticed for the first time, that the battery box is open on both sides to all the elements. I can see right through from one wheel well to the next wall! Any explanation for this/?

    thanks Steve.

It is certainly more of a battery tray than a box. The position of the battery in its front/central/low position was most likely chosen to contribute to optimal weight distribution and handling. From below it is protected by the panels of the belly pan and the floor of the front spoiler. I would think that the wheel well liners offer some protection, keeping in mind that the tires will likely fling water/debris up into the arches more so than inboard. The radiator and AC condenser would seem to block the elements from the front. Also, the spare wheel well angles down fairly steeply to the front of the car, above and ahead of the battery, probably also offering some degree of protection. To my knowledge, I do not recall there ever being any identified issues with battery damage due to exposure to the elements in routine use. The engineers obviously were not concerned.

I, too, have a '76 Euro vetroresina. Love it, warts and all.

How else will radiator air get out of the car? That is the only path for egress.
