Anyone use them? If so, which brand? Thanks.
I got a Pep Boys one that goes right on the battery. It's more a safety thing than an anti-theft device. It has a circuit that keeps low power to the computer chips but you can't start the car when it's disabled. Not sure why you want one; mine is to prevent fires. Ken
Wanted to install one as a low level security device. Apparently the car cannot be hot wired. Also, some models come with alternator protection.
Mine is obvious and easy to bypass; you need something more sophisticated. But if someone wants your car, they will tow/flatbed it to steal it. Maybe you would like one of those GPS deals? If your car is moved more than a few feet from where you set it, they call you and ask about it. If it's being stolen it's easy to recover! Ken
Used it on my 911, that thing ate batteries. I use it in my Dino. Bought for a few bucks from pep boys for the 911.
328s & the injected & newer 308s already have a battery disconnect, it's low down to the left of the spare tire well.
Yup, Verell is right, my 328 had a plastic plug you could undo and disconnect the battery. On my 78 308 GTS, the previous owner had a battery kill switch put in. Unsure of the brand, but it was metal, and very heavy duty looking thing. It was installed in the front spare tire area, left front, just forward of the spare tire well. He purchased it through some race shop, and also had a battery jump connector installed, so you didn't have to remove the tire to jump start or charge the battery...this one in fact:http://www.pegasusautoracing.com/ProductDetails.asp?RecId=1335 Here is a switch with "alternator protection": http://www.pegasusautoracing.com/ProductDetails.asp?RecId=1464 Mine did not have that (don't think, as I never saw the extra plug or wires)...it was just a simple metal switch (cable in, cable out). I never used the switch, as I didn't want to reset my presets for the radio and clock each time I used the car.
Have one in the car for the same reasons you want but do not remember the brand. A Ferrari dealer installed it.
I have one that is remotely operated from inside the car. On my 308 GTS I mounted a battery disconnect switch to the underside of the spare tire cradle at the left of the battery (drivers side). The positive battery cable is routed through it. The switch is operated by a pushrod that extends through the firewall to a TEE handle behind the brake and clutch pedals. The handle in no way interferes with the operation of the clutch or brake. When I park the car I just tap the TEE handle with my toe and the car is dead. This is especially handy if an electrical fire breaks out! I can also hook the TEE handle with my toe to turn it on. No more mysterious battery drain either. I have my stereo and amp directly wired to the battery so they aren't affected by the switch. The switch I am using is called "The Big Switch" and is sold by Flaming River products, #FR0003-2, Jegs or Summit catalogue. It includes the push rod and mounting bracket. Used on dragsters and is NHRA approved. It will also handle over 1500 amps draw. At the time I installed the switch I also made use of the extra terminals on my battery to run additional cables to the forward, L/H, outboard side of the spare tire cradle where I mounted a quick disconnect for jumping and charging. This is direct wired to the battery also. I made up a set of jumper cables with the opposite part of the disconnect on one end. I have gotten flack over drilling the 3/8" hole in my firewall for the push rod and having the handle behind the pedals. The hole is easily plugged and the handle cannot be seen way back in the footwell as it is. The two 3/16" holes in the tire cradle can also be repaired to "as new" condition. So for the purists out there, "Eat Me". Just remember, electrical fires WILL NOT go out until you KILL THE POWER. DJ
You already have one on the 328. Open the front hood and look for the red connector behind the headlamp. It just pulls apart and kills the power.
