Take it to a good local alternator shop. They'll rebuild it and guarantee it for $100 - 200 depending on the real cause. The guarantee alone makes it worth it. When I rebuilt mine, I neglected to verify the windings were good. The new parts failed very quickly due to a short in the winding. Yes you can save money by doing it yourself and feel free if you are qualified, but to me, it wasn't worth it.

When I did mine I bought all the parts from a local alternator shop. Just don't tell them it's for a Ferrari, and you'll get normal prices. If they ask, the main unit is the same as out of an Acura Legend, and the regulator is out of a Honda Prelude. Brushes are brushes, and shouldn't be a big deal to get. Just make sure you get the exact parts you order, and make sure you tell them you want those SPECIFIC parts, not alternatives.

Both excellent ways to get you on the road again. Rebuild is fairly inexpensive but as Ernie said do not mention it is from a Ferrari ;)

Quick question for all you stooges.

My alternator appear on the fritz as well (battery light won't go off).

I need to get the car on a lift to get to the alternator properly.

It's 5 miles from my house, about 10-15 mins of driving.

Will a fully charged battery get me there without the alternator charging?

I don't want to get a flatbed for this short of a distance but am not sure that the battery would last.

    Any thoughts??

You don't need a lift. All the work I've done on my car has been with a floor jack/s, and the car on jack stands.

And no the battery won't last that long.

Kai...When mine went bad, I was about 50 miles from the house. I got home OK. It just depends on the level of charge, the battery condition, and your willingness to ruin it. for 5 miles, I'd risk it. Worst case is a ruined battery. Then again...I'm a cheapazz.

+1 on the Jack stand method.

I have done many services and repairs on my 348 in my garage using jacks and jack stands as well. I think it really comes down to how much you want to do the work yourself or have someone else do it. Personally, I enjoy being out in my garage working on my car with the door open, tv on and my neighbors stopping by to see what is happening. For me, it is well worth the time to get the car up on 4 jack stands. This gives me plent of room underneath to do the work. Make sure you wear safety glasses when you are under the car (at all times). Not only can parts or tools fall onto your face while you are working but there are also pieces of dirt, rocks, grease and oil that can fall off at any time. To be comfortable, I thow down an old shipping blanket under the car. I actually fell asleep under there one late night. :D Take a look at your alt belt while you have it off. Check it for cracks and wear. Probably a good idea to just replace it anyway while you are there. ;)

The red tops are not designed to handle deep drains. It can damage them if they are run down too low. The yellow tops are made to handle deep cycling. If you decide not to do the work yourself, you can get it to the garage. If you have a battery in good condition and fully charged, you can make it 5 miles if you drive during the day without headlights. Turn off any unneeded stuff like the radio, fans, a/c, etc. You should be fine. But don't deprive yourself of the joy of doing your own work (at least the alt r&r). Either way, good luck! ;)

    I need a bigger garage... :) :)

Installing the GCK and new exhaust was plenty of "fun"... :)

I'm a little more phobic when it comes to small crawl spaces... :(

I'd have to buy additional jack stands and jack to get it up on all 4's. Going to China this weekend for 2 weeks. On one hand it would be nice to have it all done when I get back on the other hand I see the allure of doing the work myself.

There is a good write up on here about using improved componets when rebuilding your alt. and even gives the part #s to use and the manufactures, I just printed it out, took it and the alt to a local guy, he order the parts rebuilt it works great about $200 bucks.

The battery light is flickering on my 348 after a track day this past weekend. Need to get it up in the air and check all of the basics as suggested on the various threads I have found.

In case it is the alternator, does anyone happen to have the Denso part numbers for thge Acura Legend alternator and Honda Prelude voltage regulator? Or at least know the specific years of the Acura / Honda parts?

    Thanks!
