Now that I have essentially reset the battery / ECU memory, I am contemplating whether it is absolutely necessary to wait 10 / 20 mins until the radiator fans turn on before driving it.

The theory is until that point, we should not change the throttle position, etc so the ECU can initialize properly.

But what really happens if you just reset the battery and drive off? I have done both in the past, and I didn't see any negative effect by driving off right away.

Granted, once you reset the battery, the car would run non-optimally (ie. somewhat rough). But the more times it's been driven, the smoother the engine runs. And I find that to be the case in the long run for either with 10/20 minute init and without.

During the first 10-20 minutes the car is relearning how rich the cold start mixture needs to be and when to tone it back down, and where the warm idle is.

You can (and I have) driven the car right off the start, but you may find your self motoring around, come to a stop, and the engine die on you because the ECU did not have a read on the warm idle position.
