Guys, what is the biggest battery type to fit a 400i ? I'm using a 400i but it is giving up the wind on difficult starts...Could of course be the starter and I'll check cabling, but in case I need a new battery wan to make sure I get the biggest size that will fit...

    Thanks ! Lee

    The 400carb. allows ample space for a 30cm 17cm 22cm (wide/depth/height) which means approx 100Ah -pending model/type of battery.

Anyway -a fresh battery is not expensive, and never wrong !

Don't mean to give you more work, but (properly working) K/KE-Jet should not have any trouble starting cold or warm (and without touching the throttle). Does your difficult-to-start condition occur when cold, warm, or both?

A well charged stock sized battery in good condition should be all that you need to start the car if all of the other systems are working properly.

Last weekend my 400i started right up after being dormant since mid-December.

You may well need a new battery, and they are cheap, but it sounds as though there are other issues that you will need to address as well in order to get the easy starting that this car is capable of.

Battery minders are also a great investment especially if you have multiple cars in your garage.

    Hi,

I've just changed the battery on mine. The handbook says 84ah, but its really the starting amps that matter. (having said that you need the right ah for the alternator charging) Some 100ah batterys can have a low start amp (say 600a) whereas some 60ah batteries may have 640a starting current.
After a bit of searching I found a Bosch battery with 85ah and 800a starting...perfect!

PS The 400i reduction starter...where can I get one?

    Regards
    D

Steve, you are dead on--I'm walking thru the Injection manual to make sure it doesn't need to wind forever to start...One of the auxilary air valves is stuck shut and the thermo switch is bad (doesn't ohm out correctly). I did have to hold down the pedal when cold (to get the pumps on, explained by the broken thermo switch) but my starting/idling problem is likely because of the air valve.

Until just last week (when the car quite running) the battery seemed to spin the motor forever and the car started OK--both the 400i and my earlier 308 seem to spin the motor quite quickly when starting (and the "high torque" starters have always seemed irrelevant to these small displacement, low compression Ferraris). But my guess is that the aux air valve stuck (suddenly making starting and running a problem), and then I was surprised how quickly the battery seemed to slow. So my focus is really everything but the battery for now, but if I do need to run out for one. The battery in there now is a type 40, it appears that a type 65 is too big.

Btw, the other maintenance items (pumps, accumulator, filters, and even injectors) were all replaced a year ago. Warmup regulators are original, without buying a pressure gauge and learning I'll still pretend these are OK until the easy picks are used up...Lee

I use a battery that NAPA says is for a Mercedes. For starting issues do not look for the high amp hour batteries, look for high Cold Cranking Amps. I think mine is 850 CCA.

Of course getting the motor to start easily is best.

Currently, I have a Group 34 in mine:

Length is 10 1/4" & w/the battery shoved back towards the windshield as far as it will go, there looks to be about 3/4" space between the battery & the small steel angle on the forward side of the battery base pan.

Width of 6 13/16" fits precisely with respect to the battery hold down bracket @ the base. The windshield motor bracket is another obstacle to the overall width.

Height of 7 3/4" seems to be about the highest you can fit under the hood (throw a piece of 1" Styrofoam on top of the battery & shut the hood to find the ultimate height--I'd do this myself but mine is over 1000mi. away).

I'm planning on installing a Group 65 Duracell EHP series next week & it measures 11" long but the above chart shows 12 1/16", best to measure the battery before purchase.
