Why would you bring up that race. So ****ing awful. One of MS's most epic drives ruined by a bumbling fool.
Interesting fact about this race: Romain Grosjean has started this race twice. Both times he didn't get to do a full lap. Both times he managed to crash 3 drivers out. Will it be 3rd time lucky? Will he actually be able to get to lap 2?
I already slid a big envelope of money under the table to lettuce and instructed him take out Seb. Bernie was sitting next to me and smiled at lettuce; his way of saying, "Make it happen if you want to stay in F1."
I remember that one well. The tifosi in me wanted to annihilate Coulthard, but really that was a bad move by Schu (really, his vision was probably obscured by the rooster tail...although I can't remember if this was the track where Coulthard brake-checked him leading to Schu's reaction) Aaah, the days when you could do a restart with spare cars...otherwise that would have been a race with only 3 or so cars.
According to meteo-belgium, last weather forecast is: Today: warm and sunny Tomorrow: mild and rain very probable during the qualis. Sunday for the race: mild to cool, rain almost guaranted. Rgds
Here is a piece on it, seems to me that it was just bad luck, I really don't think there was any foul play, plain and simple racing incident. BBC Sport - Belgian Grand Prix: Fireworks from Schumacher & Coulthard
Coulthard had already held up Schu for a lap or so, then lifted off ON the racing line with terrible visibility...Sure. Shoe's fault. I love DC, awesome person, but bad judgement from him, and won't surprise me if this was fully orchestrated by Ron Dennis.
Watch the video in the link I posted, it was near enough impossible for MS to see, he took a chance and paid the price IMO.
Hence Coulthard (who was being lapped, and held schu up for a full lap already) should've moved over, not lift off ON THE LINE. It was inevitable as soon as he lifted off that they where going to collide. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ysL1pXq2js]Formel1 Michael Schumacher David Coulthard Crash (Spa 1998) - YouTube[/ame] You can see Schumacher moving at the last second but it was too late already. Now why would a person that's leading by such a marging simply crash into the back of a backmarker? Further more, Coulthard admitted he was at fault a few years back.
As others have posted, DC has admitted this was his fault. You don't lift while you're ON the racing line in heavy rain. Plus, Coulthard was a lapped car and had been holding the Ferrari up forever - honestly I don't think it's beyond the realm of possibility that he did this on purpose. MS should have gone ahead and kicked his ass. Up until that point, that was a master class rain drive. Class of the field is an understatement. It's also worth noting that race would never happen today, because they'd be trundling around behind the safety car
