This is will be a absolute nightmare for me if it happens.. The Sunday Times has claimed the BBC will drop its Formula 1 coverage after the 2013 season. http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2011/06/19/sunday-times-claims-bbc-drop-f1-2013/
Will ITV or Sky pick it up? You'll then have to deal with ad's just like the rest of the planet Interesting that they claim "normal" programming costs 7p/hour versus F1 @ UKP1/hour Hopefully they'll figure it out. Cheers, Ian
Well I reckon as usual there is more to it than meets the eye, if you look at some of the comments made at the bottom of the link, one suggests the figures are all wrong. Also further to be noted, the Sunday Times is a newspaper owned by News Corporation, which is bidding to buy the global commercial rights of F1 from CVC Capital Partners. I hate adverts with a passion.
As long as brundle & co will commentate... What we have here in Africa and also in Holland, the adverts only cover part of the screen. IIRC in Holland the adverts get the sound but here in Africa we still get the commentary, we just see 30% of the screen covered (a bit on the left side and the bottom) of whoever advertises every now and then. You won't miss a thing.
Reports are Whitmarsh and Bernie are pushing to get the BBC to keep coverage. Its out there on the BBC sport sight and Autosport.
They seem to switch carriers with some regularity. I guess the grass does always look greener from the out side but the attraction fades when the bills come due. A life lesson there.
This is all part of the poor old BBC trying to claim they're now too poor to afford to make programmes since the government won't allow them to raise the license fee to whatever they want. Fortunately they've got just enough money left to pay for all their bureaucrats and so-called "talent". Jonathan
Hopefully Bernie will step up. http://www.planetf1.com/driver/18227/6997818/Ecclestone-F1-should-stay-with-the-BBC
Whatever the case it will be a real blow, the BBC coverage is excellent IMO. It may not apply to alot of folk on here, but F1 is free to air, and should remain that way.
I've heard that the BBC is not renewing their contract as it is too expensive, supposably it is the most expensive program that the BBC broadcast. Including countless numbers of drama series. I hope Sky's attempt is up to scratch after all we will be paying substantially more than for the BBC, particularly if you are paying for sky sports 1,2,3 only for the Formula 1. Somehow I can't see them showing anything like the coverage that the BBC have at the moment, for example showing all three practice sessions and the BBC forum after the race. I think it's a pretty full gone conclusion that BSkyB will take over after 2013.
The BBC coverage is horrible. Just a bunch of Lewis fan boys running the Lew Ham fan boy show. It is probably the reason for their failure. F1 does not work as a free to air program. The only ones who seem to have mastered this is RTL... that is because they have a fair coverage. You will not find any fan boy constantly demeaning Ferrari and Alonso there. Hope Sky UK picks up the F1 coverage!
Your obsession with Lewis Hamilton knows no bounds...get help. Oh is zat so... so you are saying the BBC are demeaning to Ferrari and Alonso.
The BBC coverage is worst than a cheap tabloid constantly scaremongering about the big bad red team who are going to throw Lewis under a bus.... Ferrari did this... Ferrari did that... and Lew Ham comes to save the day for F1. It is this type of fan boy coverage that has caused them to have crap returns on their investment of F1 broadcast rights.
