Hi all, I think I know the answer to this, but as I work on the upgraded radiator setup and electronic AC, I'd like better access below the fiberglass covers. It seems the side "Bonnet Panels" (the ones that mount to the wheel arches) would serve the least benefit to remove, as well as the most visually obvious. It seems the biggest benefit (to me) would be removing the spare wheel related panels, but I'm not sure you can do that without also removing the side panels. Are there any tricks / tips I should know about this? Other than working from underneath, it seems removing the numerous rivets is the only way to go? Thanks in advance.
In the diagram, I'd like to remove parts 5 and 18 (spare tire carrier / cover). It seems they are at least riveted to parts 3 and 4; which are riveted to the wheel arches; which is coated in the texture that looks like LizardSkin. Not sure if it's an all-or-nothing kind of thing. Thanks Paul. Image Unavailable, Please Login
The panels are all mingled together so you need to carefully drill out and remove all rivets and remove all involved panels. Big job but perfectly feasible. best, Peter
Thanks Peter, this pictures are especially helpful. You confirmed my suspicion that there really aren't any shortcuts with this.
@pshoejberg I removed most (all?) rivets. The side panels came right off. The middle panel (the big one, aka "spare wheel carrier") doesn't want to budge. My car ('83) has a lot of thick light gray adhesive on the center panel, all around the bulkhead area. Did you have that too? I don't see it in your pics. Trying to resist the temptation to go medieval on it...
Removing the glassfiber panels from these old Ferrari's take's some nerves, force and occasionally also some cutting to get the panel free from the geometry of the steel frame. There are basically rivets on all 3 the sides of the wheel carrier. Some of them are hidden by a thick layer of flexible "adhesive" as you call it. Against the bulkhead you also might find some glassfiber matt's that you need to cut and move as I recall it. I have hundreds of pictures from my adventures some years ago and below is a few more from the assembly process. Note that there is no rivet holes along the edge of the carrier at this stage in the assembly (All my glassfiber was repaired and holes re-drilled later). Thanks Peter, that's all very helpful. By the way, looks like you did a great job on your restoration. A lot of attention to detail.
Wrapping this up for future readers. I was able to remove all of the frunk panels. The glue / adhesive was not the main culprit for the stubborn panels, but rather many haphazard / hidden rivets. Eg, the RH corner (near the bulkhead) had 8 randomly placed rivets.
