Just finished an 84 engine out service that evolved into more than a typical service. Not sure a typical service by the book with no additional repairs happens anymore considering the car's age!

Once the engine was out it was discovered that the head gaskets were leaking enough that the coolant loss was baking on the right headers. The clutch was fried and 2nd gear was beyond the usual fussiness when cold, bordering on not usable even warm. The last service was 10 years ago, belts looked fine and tensioners were good, water pump was also free of leaks.

There was a new carrier set aside for this service while I was there so I set that up, replaced the carrier bearings and crown gear bolts as well.

I didnt take pics with the heads off, sorry for the technical gap. I removed the the block from the gearbox, replaced 2nd syncro, installed my billet diff upgrade, replaced cam drive case bearings and seals, new clutch and basically cleaned it up and plated whatever I removed so it looks pretty again.

Impeccable. Did you paint or just clean all the castings?

Give me a call or shoot me an email Pete. Every car is different and this one needing a clutch, a second gear syncro, diff upgrade and head gaskets it changes the cost dramatically vs just a service, re-plate and detail. The finished product would look the same for much less money.

The car was used every spring and summer and the belts looked great.

Interesting, have gone as far as 8 years and belts always looked good too. Probably belt construction and tech has improved since BBs were new. If i remmeebr correctly when Trs came out they said 30K miles in USa and did not give a timeframe, europe had 15Kms.

Then of course cars sat a really long time and maybe there were some failures, maybe the 4 valves on a Tr have more drag, and of course 355's started blowing belts.

Also many people do not pay attention tot he tensioners at EO time and I suspect these may be a major factor in belt faliures on BBs.

I think this is year 5 for me.

Paul you have me all charged for how good my car will look and drive once it gets the Newman treatment. Its also on a spring fall cylce, as sticky summer and BBs dont mix well, although it never sits for more than a month in sumemr, just keep well oiled..

Clean and paint as per original. Some parts are not painted which in this case includes the gearbox. Late 84's didn't get paint inside or out on the box just like the testarossas. Im assuming Ferrari either deemed it unnecessary or they revised their casting process (doesn't look different) late in the boxer run carrying over through the testarossas until the end of 96
