Thanks, what do BBLMs weigh ?

I ran against 2 at Pocono but I think those guys had like 600 hp + bcus they left me in the dust

    William and Tom,

The highest dyno sheet I've seen had 519bhp on a bench running on 114 octane (figure more like 480 at the rear wheels). This engine had virtually every tweak, but I know of at least one or two more recently built motors that might possibly have slightly more tweaks and higher figures. Modifications include lighter weight cranks and pistons made of billet steel and aluminum and titaniums rods. Also, titanium springs. Interestingly, the build sheets on the BBLMs say "Normali" when it comes to the pistons and rods. I know also that the stock BBLM rod is virtually identical to the rods in the 348!

While It's hard to get much more horsepower out of the BB block than that, the real benefits are increased torque. The same motor referenced above was close to 400 lbft. Again, the latest and greatest motors might be slightly higher.

However, when you start talking these kinds of numbers, the motors really are more like grenades with the pins pulled: they're just waiting to go off. Moreover, the life on the motors decreases dramatically, as is expected.

Weight is around 2200lbs, IIRC, depending on bodywork composition. At least a few of the last BBLMs had early kevlar composite bodies which reduced weight.

Thanks those postes were very helpful

I'm looking for a spare 512TR engine to build. My race car is already just over 500hp w everything stock except the ignition system, computers & no mufflers or cats + 110 octane fuel

I think once a 512TR race engine is built 600 hp should be easy to accomplish, 700hp may be within reach.

After all turbo TR engine have made well over 1,000 hp

but I prefer NA & I also dont want an expensive hand grenade so I wont max out the power

    William,

I'm sure those numbers are achievable. As you say, the Koenig Competition TRs had numbers at least that big with twin turbo set ups.

I'd be interested to know how much hp is really available from a stock TR block with a normally aspirated set up.

The principal competition for the BBLMs are the 512S/Ms (and F of Hollfelder) in the Historic Challenge. Actually, the fastest BBLMs are now beating the 512S/Ms outright! The 512S/Ms are producing probably something in the 625bhp range. However, those cars are kind of scary. The fuel transfer line sits right under your knees. The footbox may also be in front of the front wheel axle line (or thereabouts). As the newer models are eventually accepted into the Historic Challenge, they'll also likely outpace the BBLMs (333s, F40LMs and possibly the F50GTs).

However, no matter how much power the BBLMs can generate, the Porsche 935s and 956s produce way more. It's hard to compete in HSR against them.

I plan on racing in HSR next year & some more interesting events to get some race history for my car

    Stock 512TR hp is 428 I believe

With a few small mods like a Tubi, no cats, & wrapping insulation on the intake I saw 470 hp from my 512TR on a shock dyno so minus 10% for driveline drag thats about 423 at the wheels. It could probably see 500hp w a chip

Accepted losses for drivetrain is 15%, some say higher for mid engined ferraris but I would use 15% as a rule of thumb until I dyno the engine on a stand then in the car.
