I just saw a pickup get well and truly lit up by an unmarked patrol car - just about 3 miles east of the Bush Tollway intersection with 635.

I suppose it was highway patrol, but a couple of cities patrol this stretch as well.

The car was unusual to say the least - a dark Burgundy 4-door Chevy Malibu. No external marks at all, and all lights were in the interior of the car. Did have doggy-dish hub caps, though.

    could be a scam, right?!?!

I didn't think we had un-marked LEOs in Texas that could pull you for traffic violations.

I know of a few county deputies that roll in un-marked cars, but they do more of the real police work, investigations, etc..

I wouldn't think of a LEO in a burgundy car, either.

Same here - never "burgundy". Did see an unmarked white Crown Vic or two, but I think this was at least 10 years back.

Houston's Beltway 8 tollway use a beige Toyota Camry for a bit, that was sneaky.

We have several 'white logo on white' HPD cars, you are right on top of them before you can make out the markings, in daylight....

There used to be a gray "souped up" Mustang patrolling the Bush - and "challenging" other cars.

I actually did see him a couple of times but not in anything that would have given him a challenge. :)

Anyone remember back in the early 90s when Addison had Volvo 740 police cars?

I actually saw the burgundy car with someone pulled over the other day. There are some other oddball vehicles with dash lights running around out there. I have seen a black ford pickup before on the Tollway but it was a few years ago.

SAT uses Malibus/Chargers/Yukons/Ram pu's/Crown Vics. All unmarked, or lame tone on tone stripes, non-reflective. No lights at all. Sneaky. All instant on, usually. Not much laser.
SAT regular patrols are having fewer and fewer light bars too.

Malibus and Chargers are hard to spot. Use traffic cover and hills/curves to limit direct line of constant sight. Sometimes I hear people use brief serial bursts in light traffic to disappear during the loss of direct vision. I've heard it takes years of practice (59, 45, 288, I-5, I-15, 281, I-10).

Bastages getting mean replacing the lost income from car and home sales taxes here. V1 helps, but nothing better than hypervigilance. From what I hear.

Funny thing, back in the late 80's early 90's Westover Hills Police Dept. used volvo patrol cars (donated by the Bass family) until they kept breaking down. It was a common site to see them dead on the side of the road.

In the late 90s and early 2000s, Virginia and Houston both had unmarked police Camaros... and they were purple! When I lived in Midland, there was an unmarked green Camaro police car.

Unmarked cars really bother me. I never know if it's truly a cop, or some bozo out to cause harm.

Really. The unmarkeds we have here have dark dark tint in all windows, can't see squat. I actually called 2 in to traffic commander as a fakey dos. They were real. He seemed surprised someone had concerns?

Exactly why you should never pull over unless you are absolutely sure!!

If they are for real and you don't act like a fool, you'll be ok. Look for a well-lit area with lots of witnesses.

Really? With the economy the way it is and several news reports of "fake" cops why should he be shocked? I think its completley appropriate to be concerned.

My problem with the unmarked car for traffic "enforcement" is that this is patently NOT enforcement. It is entrapment surveilance.

If a marked police car cannot slow a person down, then he deserves the ticket for being stupidly arrogant.

I have a problem with an unmarked car slipping into a stream of traffic, all doing maybe 80 in a 65 or 70, and then picking out a victim like a shark picking out the weakest tuna.

This is not "slowing down the pack" if that is the real purpose. That is, if the real purpose is NOT to just write tickets for monetary purposes.

Plus what Tillman said - who knows that this is not the hillside strangler with red lights?

Saw a blue Tahoe from the Frisco PD pulled someone over last night. The Tahoe had all internal lights and black steel wheels. I did a little prayer that it was not me because I would have run right past him without noticing unless the V1 picked him up.

Jim! Of course I am still here. It is a tough habit to break. I check in every day or two. Between work and working on my MBA I rarely get to do much more than scan the threads.
