Happy New Year to all. I'm a lapsed Ferrari Club member, and have been away from the forum for over a year. I seriously toyed with buying a Ferrari about two years ago, and financially wasn't able to proceed.

I purchased an Alfa spider during my two year absence, and had it redone by Peter Krause. It's a great car, and goes well with my Moto Guzzi (bought new and a lot of motorcyle with all the Italian quirks that give it character), but neither the Alfa or the Guzzi move my heart like Ferrari does. (By the way the local Alfa club is quite strong and very active - nice people too).

A lot has changed over the last two years, and some very impressive new cars have appeared, from Ferrari and others, and there are some very low prices on used non Ferrari cars (Charlotte Acura had a certified preowned 2001 NSX with 30K miles offered at $53,500). At the end of the day, my heart belongs to Ferrari (I actually have 4 Ferraris - unfortunately they are all about a foot long and rest on display stands).

As I contemplate what model to buy, your thoughts are appreciated. I'm not sure of prices, but it appears as if F355 cars have come down quite a bit in the last two years, and that the 328 has moved upward. I'm amazed by the large price gains in older Ferraris with some gains almost double what I remember from two years ago. I also have seen some 550s at what appear to be very low prices (sub $90K). Seems like a strange market with prices all over the place for similar cars.

Any thoughts about the "sweet spot" (best relative value) are also welcome. I'm leaning toward a F355 Berlinetta with manual shift, but I can easily be tempted by a pristine 328 or a bargain 348.

I will get the buyers guides from the ferrariforum, and any other suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks again for providing this forum, and for the accumulated wisdom that this community offers.

Welcome back! I went from an '86 328gts (serviced by Peter Krause) to a '98 355spider and there is a big difference between cars. I would say drive both and see if the extra dollars you will spend on a 355 warrants what you feel in the seat of your pants driving it. If not, get a nice 328 (with a PPI) and pocket the extra money. Just keep in mind that the scheduled services for both cars are not cheap, so keep a budget for that. I know little about the 348, so cannot help you there.
