So, on Saturday I got a call from an AD. I have been on their list for about 18 months or so - but for an OP or a Datejust (really want the GMT though).

Anyway, they have a 36mm Explorer 1 they are offering me. It's not really what I want next - GMT BLRO is my first choice. My wife wants one of the mint green, galaxy bezel Datejust 31s. The Explorer is on my list but it's somewhere in maybe 4th or 5th down my list. Apparently they called me because I was ok with a 36mm Datejust.

Not sure if I should get it to maintain the relationship or just say no and hold out for what I want. I was not on the list to get an Explorer from them, but got the random call. My wife isn't going to be too much more tolerant of me spending this kind of money on watches for much longer - I have four Rolexes at this point. She wants new flooring in the house...priorities ya know...

I will be up there (about two hours from me) on Thursday and can see it in person if it hasn't sold.

Obviously, I would like to maintain the relationship, but if I pass on this am I getting bumped from them forever??

I am on the "list" at another AD for the same two watches.

    Thoughts???

I've turned down a bunch of rolexes from my AD (okay, maybe 5 or 6). It's really tough sometimes, but you know what you want. If it's not what you want, my advice is not to get it. You'll regret it. Keep your powder dry for when what you really want comes along. I've turned down two toned Daytona's etc when what I really wanted was a Pepsi GMT, or a steel/white gold Skydweller with a blue dial. I now have both of those. The last watch on my list is a panda Daytona - might take a while to get it, but it does spread out the cost.

I went gray market when I got my TT Daytona. I am in no rush on the GMT, but would like to get it from an AD. My other Rolexes have been pre-owned, so I have never bought one from an AD but would really like that experience. When it's time, if I have to go gray market, then that's fine too I guess. I just didn't expect to really ever get a call from an AD about a watch - so that part was kind of exciting.

The 36mm Explorer is too small, I love my 42m Explorer 2.

I turned down a Daytona just like yours a couple of years ago, IIRC it was $14,400 at list. I was mildly interested in it, but they gave me a terrible number on my trade (which I unloaded with @flat_plane_eddie who gave me about double what they offered) so I passed. I have not gotten another call from them but I also don't think they've had anything on my list come through.

With the watch market declining, I would pass.

The only thing I'll add is to chat with the dealer for a few minutes when you pass. Maybe walk through your wish list again. Thank them for keeping you in mind.

Had a nice meeting with them today.

Reemphasized the why I specifically wanted to wait for the Pepsi. I outlined what I wanted for my wife. I tried on a few "display only" pieces including the Batgirl - I loved it - just wish it were available and in red/blue. I also tried on the James Cameron Deepsea - it was heavier than I thought it might be, but not so heavy as to be unmanageable.

I also looked at a few Tudors - I really like the red/blue GMT, but fear it would only be duplicated when/if I get the Pepsi. The Ranger looks really great in person - much more than I thought it might. I would immediately replace the bracelet with a vintage brown leather strap and it would be amazing!

They also had the Hamilton Murph in - which I always liked. I wouldn't mind getting one of those - just hadn't expected or prepared to buy anything today. I don't know if I could have gotten it past my wife. If I came home with a Rolex Pepsi - no problem - but coming home with something on the fly like that - maybe not...

  7. Don't buy a watch just because it's there.

Buy it because it's what you want.

True for watches, cars, and everything in between.

You said it’s #4 or #5 on your list.

If you communicated this list to your AD, do the right thing and honor your expression of desire. It’s only a watch …

I turned down a Yacht Master because I wanted the Pepsi GMT. I have a good relationship with my AD and a few months later I got the call for the GMT. They know I want a Daytona next and understand why I passed on the Yacht Master. As others have said, get what you want....

Going to be back up there on Tuesday. They are located about two hours from me. I am going to be curious what they might have gotten in, although I don't expect anything to really be different.
